You need to upgrade bud. I have found PC's being thrown out at the doctors office and brought them home and fixed, and these all had XP on them. If your running 98 your whole pc is probably not worth the hassel. You can buy a whole PC for like 3 or 4 hundred. By the time you buy an operating system and a hard drive it will be almost as much as a new pc. If you go to tigerdirect.com you can buy a cheap PC. Windows XP is a 100 $ or more and a decent hard drive is like another 80 $. So why throw into an old PC just buy a new one for whatever your needs are. If you just surf the web, then you don't need a pricey pc.

Upgrade to Windows 2000 pro, if you can find it. Ask people at your work if they have either the 98 CD or the Windows 2000 upgrade CD someone there is bound to have a CD you can borrow or make you a copy of. it's possible that computer wont run XP if it's an old 98os system. also yes it sounds like your harddrive is fried or is at the verge of failing. back up all personal files now before it's to late.

You can find Windows 98 cds on eBay. They're not too expensive, but you won't find them for really cheap, either.

If there's valuable info on the hard drive (what hd doesn't?) then you can buy an external housing unit for that drive with a USB connection and you might be able to read that drive on another computer.

simple! follow the instructions-
1. take the backup of data
2. format hard disk(warning: all the data on hard disk will be erased)
3. install win98 freshly
This will definitely solve the problem.
Such errors occurs due to voltage fluctuations, so use stabilizer or UPS, so that system will not affect.
