Cats usually purr when they are content, but they also purr when in pain or scared. It's a calming mechanism is some cases. And no, it's not automatic....they only do it when they want to.

Cans can purr automatically, cats are all different, I read that cats will purr when feeling affectionate and loving, but they may also purr when upset or scared. Its a vibration of the vocal cords, but can be controlled by the cat. I also read that the best way to know your cats mood is not by listening for purring, but looking at the ears, if they are upright and alert, they are happy and content, uf they are slanted backwards or sideways, they are angry or aggressive.

Good luck, cats are awesome!

Cats can also purr when they are scared or nervous. Don't be deceived by a purring cat, they may not be in the greatest of moods. Cats control when they purr or don't purr. Cats are very wonderful but temperamental creatures. You can never make a cat do what it doesn't want to.

No, I read a book on it once, well an article...there's loads of reasons...but they always control it, I don't think it's automatic, although you know, they are cats, and not humans so I don'k it's like they go 'ooh, I'm going to purr now, for a laugh'.

Sometimes they do it when they're angry or wound up, and you can tell cos it's a bit louder and forceful...almost like they're trying to make a point, or pretend that they're happy when they're not.

Cats purr for many reasons. They purr when they are happy or when enjoying something, but also when they are in pain or in big trouble. Even when a cat is ill it will purr when you caress it. A mother cat purrs when she is washing her kittens, but also during labour.
Purring is a way of communicating for a cat. Lots of cats purr when you are preparing them their meal. Mine starts purring particularly loud when I have my playtime with her.
