We have a large window in the front of our house, over the driveway. About three times a year I'll hear a BONK, and realize a bird has hit our window.

In those cases, the birds fall onto the driveway. It's always sad, especially when it's a really interesting or beautiful bird; the most recent bird lost this way was a kingfisher.

Apart from impacts and in-flight predation, though, I don't think birds would be likely to die while flying, at least not often; a bird that was sick enough to be near death would more likely not have enough energy to fly, and would either fall from its perch or be captured by predators, depending on its habitat (tree-dwelling or ground-dwelling). And in the wild, of course, nature's scavengers would make short work of any birds that fell to the ground.

Which is probably the real answer to why you haven't seen any birds that simply dropped dead -- they're quickly consumed by the world's cleaning crew, including other birds.

They would stop flying and walk because they are so weak. they they might get attacked by a squrell or something. Or they might just die. Most likely the only time a bird dies while flying is when it runs into a window or while migrating.

Most birds tend to die of exhaustion when flying over large stretches of water (during migration) and so fall into the sea...land birds who sicken tend to get taken out by larger birds or foxes as they are too weak to fly off and escape

Most birds are eaten by a predator once they become weak, I don't think any of them just die while flying.

They probably don't die on the wing unless someone shoots them. There's lots of predators including domestic cats that will eat a dead bird they find on the ground.

Other animals would feed on the bodies of dead birds and make light work of it too. Not many animals in the wild die of natural, age related causes like us. Their world is more savage in many ways with many more accidents and preditors.

When a bird is dying, they know it, and generally they will go somewhere to hide, they like it where is warm and dark, that is why you dont alaways just see them laying in the road unless they were hit by a car.
