It's because in order to get a good grip on the lid, you are probably having to squeeze the plastic tub too much, building up pressure for when it opens. Try holding the rim of the tub.

because when yogurt is packed, it is packed with the air removed andd compressed - so creating a sort of vaccuum between the yogurt and the layer, this helps to keep it fresh and prevent it from becoming sour easily.

when you tear the layer, it splatters as the air escapes.

the only way is be gentle and rip the label slowly allowing time for the air to enter. keep the side that is being opened away from you to avoid it being splashed on your clothes

And if my attempt at wit doesnt get me 10pts, try placing it on a table or bench so you dont have to hold it so tightly, and hold it by the hard plastic at the top.

because it is the way you do it . sit the container on a flat level service. hold firmly in one hand and slowly open with other hand . open from left to right or vice versa depending if you are left or right handed ,,ml..

I open a carton everyday and that doesn't happen to me so it must be you not holding it firmly as you peel the top away

it doesn't - put it down on a table and peel the lid back slowly, make sure the plastic cup part is at the bottom...

maybe they should have instructions, other than "peel here", and an arrow...

air pressure difference between sealed carton and outside pressure............this also affects those little milk cartons especially at high altitude
