Yes, Nissan makes Infinity, Toyota makes Lexus, and Honda makes Acura.

Not sure if it is still the case, but it used to be Acura was only a North American brand. I have an uncle in Germany that used to own a Honda Integra, not Acura Integra.

RE:
Does Nissan make the Infinity line of cars? Or are Nissan and Infinity totally different companies?

In Japan, all cars that are made by Nissan are called Nissan. This includes the Infinitis, for example: A Infiniti G20 is a Nissan Primera in Japan, and a G35 is a Nissan Skyline. They have the same cars here and there. But if the Infinitis were not apart from Nissan here in the states, they would probably lose a lot of the prestige that they have.

And for the record, Nissan was not bought by Renault, they have a partnership. Renault only owns 44% of Nissan, so they have a big say, but they DO NOT OWN NISSAN!! Nissan owns 33% of Renault.

Nissan is indeed Infinity's parent company. Many of their models are built upon the same platfoms. There are however many style and performance differences between the two brands. Infinity is intended to be the luxury line of the two. Of the Infinity makes which share a common build platform with the Altima, there are 2 that I am aware of: The Infinity G35, and The Infinity M I left a link for the Infinity website below. Magazines such as Car and Driver, or Road and Track can provide more detailed cross references between the two brands.

Nissan and Infiniti are two completely different companies. However, Nissan has ownership over the Infiniti company.

Just like GM covers Chevrolet and Cadillac, and Chrysler has ownership over Dodge, and Toyota has ownership over Lexus and Scion; Nissan has ownership over Infiniti. However, Nissan was recently bought by Renault, a French auto company.

Nissan Japan officially belongs to Renault of France, or rather the majority of stock holding. They are from the same stable, but build in different assembly lines, and even in different factories as far as the Nissan and Infinity range of cars go

Nissan's, Infinity is Honda's, Acura Toyota's, Lexus. Mazda was going to have a luxury division Armati but Ford bought them out. All luxury divisions are sold up scale clean quiet dealerships with free pick up and delivery pastries in the waiting areas. But you will pay an extra $20 hour for service labor and more for the car too.
