I quit smoking cold turkey over two years ago, the cough I had went away 3 weeks after quitting. It is common for someone to quit smoking and develop a cough. Hang in there it will go. No two quits are the same so its a tough question to answer, just believe that it will stop, cause it will.

When I joined the army back in 84, I had to quit cold turkey. Because of the exercise regemine we had to follow, I was breathing better and could do more the first week or so, and the thought of a smoke never crossed my mind, as I could not smell anyone else'e smoke. The cough you are referring to is your lungs trying to clean out the bad stuff to make room for the good air, and should last only a week or so. Try sucking on hard candy to help keep your mind off the cigs and you should be able to stop forever.

It depends on how long and how much you smoked, and the type of work and/or amount of exercise you do each day.
I quit CT almost 10 years ago and still have an occasional smoker's cough when I have a hardy laugh. But the bad cough usually will last a month or so as your lungs begin to expell the toxin buildup caused by smoking, in an effort to heal.
Keep up the good work, the rewards are amazing!

I personally haven't BUT I have a very close friend & neighbor who quit smoking 2 weeks ago cold turkey. She said she hasn't had any side effects at all from not smoking. Maybe if you have been smoking for a really long time, you're body is just trying to get rid of all the damage in your lungs. You might want to ask a doctor about this.

First of all, WELL DONE! Your body is going through a transition -- recuperating, healing. I wouldn't worry about the cough unless it gets noticeably worse over the next week. You may be looking for signs that you will look instantly healthier now that you are no longer smoking. It won't happen that way, but if you take care of yourself -- get a good sleep every night, drink lots of water, eat healthy and exercise -- you will soon be glowing!

yes, that is common. When I quit smoking it only lasted about as long as a cold cough. It is because your cilia are not paralyzed anymore and are trying to get all the gunk they never moved out from your smoking...hang in there...
