One that you knew would bring a prison sentence....would you get the best lawyer you could find and try to get yourself out of it??

Or would you offer up a full confession?

Please give details. Thanks.

Couldn't you conceivably do both? Couldn't you get a good lawyer but still offer a full confession?

I would hope not to commit the crime in the first place, but people do get into some desperate situations at times. I think there is something honorable about owning up to your mistakes and I think it is appropriate to make wise decisions for yourself.

I couldn't let a lawyer badger victims if there were any. And I couldn't let someone else be accused of my crime.

But would I want a good lawyer to help the jury understand my state of mind or circumstances? Absolutely.

I think it's only human nature to try to get out of the punishment! That starts when we are about two years old and we figure out how to lie! It's a survival instinct! The truth is, there's probably alot of people in prison now, who even without prison time, would not recommit crimes. Having to live with their own conscience, would be punishment enough! I know this to be true, since I committed some when I was a wild teenager! Fortunately, I never caught, but I still have to live with it! So even if I got caught, I think I would still have to try to get out of the time!

Haha...damn. Okay honestly?

If it was some stupid petty crime that didn't really justify prison time (such as being caught with weed or saying "bomb" in an airport), but the prison time was inevitable---damn straight I'd hire a good lawyer.

On the other hand, if I had just killed or robbed someone, I don't think my conscious would let me live with it even IF I tried to get out of it. I'd probably confess and take whatever consequences I had to.

So...I committed a crime, and was arrested? In that case, yes I'd get a lawyer. Noone should defend themselves because the judge will not be lenient if you do that, so there's no point.

In terms of a confession...well I guess that depends if the crime was a sin, but God would already know and I don't confess my sins to priests or whatever, just to God himself.

It would depend on the crime and the impact that crime would have on those that I love. I would also have to ask myself, "Who would benefit by a full confession?" And not having a full understanding of the law and the implications therein, "Would it not be better to offer a full confession to a lawyer?" From there, I would have the benefit of knowing the legal ramifications of the act itself and would be in a far better position of knowing how to proceed to the benefit of all concerned.

Absolutely 100% honestly, I think I would confess. If i felt justified in my crime, I would want to hire a lawyer to get a reasonable sentence. I hope I'm never in that situation.

II: Honestly, completely honestly, I wouldn't commit a crime that would bring about a sentence.

I went to jail three times in my life, over-nighters, (not drunk-tank sentences, mind you) but that confinement was enough to keep me on the 'good' side of the law.

So, I would get a lawyer to defend myself against false charges, but because Truth is eternal, I'd bet we'd win.

geez another tough one Spooky! It would seriously depend on the situation. You can say one thing and then when actually faced with it, its a different story!! There is only one situation I can think of that would actually result in me committing a crime....and that is if someone hurt my child...well lets just say they wouldn't live through it. I don't' think I could give you a truly honest answer to what my next steps would be because I just don't know. I appreciate your questions more than you know....looking this close at myself isn't always comfortable...but I think that's what I like about it...We don't grow if we don't move out of the comfort zone!

I would hire a lawyer to help me plea bargain my way to a lighter sentance than I would probably be entitled to. But, if I was guilty, the best I could do would be to give excuses for why I did it, and not try to get out of it by lying.

I did commit a crime and I pled guilty because I did do it. The judge gave me three years probation and I have never knowingly committed a crime again. Jail time cured me of ever wanting to be in that situation again...
