What is typicly done for a baby's first birthday without scareing him? Are there things that most families do? I have no idea what they like as a celebration without making them afraid.
Any sugestions?

Don't do a surprise party. Just gather your friends & family with a yr old themed party. For my son it was Sesame Street. Also I made a little cake just for him. I put one candle on it, we sang Happy Bday to him helped him blow it out then let him dig in. It was a mess but well worth the entertainment. At 1st he didn't know what to do but once he got the first taste he was hooked. As far as opening gifts I had to help & he wanted to play with the paper more than the toys.... Each child is different. Just sit back & relax everything will be fine.

Ripping the paper and smooshing the cake with their hands or face is pretty much the highlight of their day :-)

Is there a Gymboree in your area? If you want someone else to handle the party, this would be a good place for babies. Fisher Price has some excellent party ideas as well, especially for things to do and memories.

Try source link below for some other ideas if you really want to do a party including people other than family. Check your local library for books with ideas too. All kids are different...you are the best judge of your son's personality and what things he would enjoy. I would avoid balloons though, if they pop and a piece gets in a child's mouth s/he can choke on it. Also put any ribbons & bows on presents out of reach right away, the material on these can make babies sick if they chew on the bows.

Scaring them? I'm sure your baby is familiar enough with your family and close friends that he won't be scared by their presence. Just remember KISS. Keep It Simple Silly. Cake, Ice Cream and Presents at home are enough--and a camera.

for my kids we just had a picnic celebrations for their first birthdays. We invited all the family, had hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.. later cake & ice cream. the kids are too young to remember anything. my son actually fell asleep in his pack n play & slept through most of the party. Just make sure you take pics of your baby eating his 1st piece birthday cake.

A one year old has no concept of "celebration". The parties are for the parents.

I did a party party and we cooked out. Something low key. If he gets upset just let him start opening gifts. Or if necessary open one here and there to keep him having fun.
