I was in a car accident in 2002. I was nearly decapitated, and the strange thing was, maybe 15' before I was to collide with a semi, although my eyes were open, I didn't see in front of me. I saw images, pictures of family and loved ones, and felt an incredible peace wash over me.
When my car struck, it was forced to the right which kept my head from coming off (longer story) from the protrusion which came through the windshield. I don't remember striking, however. I only remember images and relaxation, then looking around and seeing I was ok. This gives me a great reassurance that my mind and being will not allow me, thankfully, to feel the pain and know of death when it hits. I dislike pain more than anything.

Yup. It's a fairly common human occurance, easily explained. I've had it happen quite a few times in my life and remain a strict atheist. Funny enough, I've never seen hell in any of these so-called visions.
