For starters, God is not performing the root canal.....What is with these bible thumpers?

I had a root canal and I had the worst experience, but even that wasn't enough to never have another one. Really, you'll be fine, but if you are in pain, KEEP CALLING THE DENTIST. They need to know. They will give you the lowest dose and quantity of pain pill, so I had to call the dentist to have the dose increased and called him 4 times to get the 10-pill prescription renewed. Then, he asked me to come back, opened me up and found an absess. He drained the pocket of fluid and fixed me up right. I just kept taking pain pills and a week later, I was fine. Peace and good luck.

I've had about 18 root canals. I only experienced pain BEFORE I got them (caused by the infection that made the root canal necessary), never after. I was uncomfortable sometimes if the tooth being worked on was in the back of my mouth, because of the length of time it takes to complete the work...having to keep one's mouth open wide for a long time gets kind of stiff. Other than that, you have nothing to worry about. If you have had regular dental work and have had shots of lydocaine for that, you'll do fine with a shot. I see someone suggested gas, but it's not for everyone. Gas makes me paranoid. You'll do what's best for you, and all will be well. Don't be nervous!

First of all, the main goal of the "root canal" is to save the tooth, not pull it.

It all depends on your Dentist. First of all, never, ever get it done by a regular Joe dentist. If you do, you may have a really bad experience and potential failed procedure (lost tooth).

Definitely have it done by a specialist in the field. A good specialist will do a root canal for you with very little discomfort and high probability of successful procedure (happy tooth)

If you're not scheduled to see a specialist, you should cancel your appointment - now!

No, they usually give you a local and numb you really good. Then after the root canal, they usually will give you a crown. The reason being the old tooth is dead. I hope you have good dental insurance and or make good money or have good savings account. A crown can cost up to $1000.00 and a root canal a little more than that. I know, my wife just had one done a month ago.

No, root canals were something to be feared 20 -30 years ago, but with the advances in dentistry today, they are done with very little discomfort to you. If you are getting a root canal done, chances are that you are in more pain now than you will be from the procedure itself...good luck

Having a root canal done should be painless, because the nerve is dead to start with (thus the procedure). Dead nerve = no sensation.

It will only hurt if the site is infected. It is not the actual tooth that is hurting but the surrounding site.

Dentistry now has improved procedures.

Not at all, its relatively painless - actually less painful than getting a tooth taken out. They'll put your gums asleep and possibly you if you have enough that have to get done. Stay calm - imagine your happy place while you lay there - and you'll be done in no time.

No, not if you have a good dentist. Dentistry is pretty painless now a days.

No, it'll be fine. If you can, let them gas you, it helps. The worst part is the needle they numb you with. Youll be fine.
