My son will be 6 in November. He weighs 38 lbs. he also has a small appetite, was born at 29 weeks and had surgery at 3 1/2 months. Although he's lite, he's strong and extremely smart. I've always worried about his weight but his pediatrician always said if he's healthy then its okay.

Talk to his pediatrician and express your concerns.

Good luck and God bless your son.
Hope this Helps.

My son at six was also a bit small, but by the age of 16 he was 6" and 185 lbs dont let this bother you. Males grow until sometimes age 21. Even if he stops growing and is always small that doesnt make him any less of a man. When hes a daddy its better hes a good loving father thats a bit smaller then a 6'4 250 lbs abusive father who beats his child. Please dont be concerned at this point my second son who was always on the skinny side is now 20 6'2 200 lbs he didnt start really growing to about age 14.

I have a seven year with no health problems to speak of and he weighs about 42 pounds wet! But remember HEIGHT matters also. My son is usually the shortest kid in his class.

It's all relative..You should ONLY be concerned if he has fallen off his percentile chart for both height and weight. (CHECK CHART BELOW) If he was in the 10th percentile for the past 6 years, then he is growing normally and consistently.

Consistency is the key, not the weight itself compared to other children his age.

Your height and weight and your husband's height and weight should also be considered when looking at your child's weight and height.
Unfortunately you are comparing your son to a world where being slightly overweight is the norm.

If you and your pediatrician feel that your child could stand to gain a few pounds (it could help him if he ever gets a really bad cold or flu to have more weight on him) consider using something like pediasure and multivitamin supplements to keep him healthy.

His heart surgery may have an impact on his growth, but it should only be a "small" factor.

My 6 year old boy weighs about 50 lbs. He has never had any health problems and has a fairly good appetite. So, your son may be a little small for his age, but given his medical conditions he isn't too far behind.

my son is 5.5 and he weighs 44 pounds. He doesn't eat 3 meals a day, he eats 6 small meals a day. He has a small appetite, I don't force him to eat, he eats and snacks CONSTANTLY. Maybe that's what your son needs. Let him eat and snack when he wants. My son loves to snack on raisins, apples and pears, so i make sure he has them at sight all the time.

I agree with a previous post. Its sad that manufacturers are aiming more for the chubby kids now. My sons pediatrician wasn't too concern about his weight. Each child is different and the majority of kids today are overweight. I think its sad actually. I don't understand how parents can let there kids get that way and be alright with it. My husband and I arent heavy set at all so i think that's where our son gets it from.
If your sons pediatrician isn't too concern about his weight, i think you shouldn't be too concerned either.

I don't have a 6 year old but my 11 year old only weighs 50 lbs. His 9 year old brother weighs 48 lbs. Some kids are just small but unless the Dr. is concerned then don't worry.

If he is a little small for his age then 40 might be just fine. My daughter weighed about the same at 6. She is 8 now and on the petite side and weighs about 55.

My son is 6 and weighs about 42-45 pounds. He's tall though, so his doctors say he's fine. He doesn't eat as much as you would expect a 6 year old either. Only problem is, even a size 5 falls off of him, but he's too tall for a size 4. Clothes shopping is horrible for him, lol.

I also have a six year old son and he weighs about 42-48 lbs right about now. But I still say he's skinny because I can see his ribs. But he eats very well and he's right on target and it sounds like your son is too. Some children just grow slower than others their age. Don't worry....he's a boy and he'll hit that growth spurt real soon.

My 7 year old son is 4'4 1/2" tall and weighs 72 pounds, his dad is 6'3'' and weighs about 300 pounds. I am 5'10'' and 175 pounds..my 4 year old Daughter is 3' 9" and weighs 40 pounds she looks like a bean pole compared to her brother. I really think it has alot to do with the parents build. She eats well and he does too. As long as you doc says he is ok and he eats healthy Im sure he is fine.
