There is no need to be artistic if you want to be an Engineer. Manual drafting generally makes use of rulers anyhow. You DO need to be able to visualize things spacially, i.e. envision a 3D object from a 2D picture. Engineering is not only about designing. There are many other aspects of Engineering. Regardless, getting an Engineering degree is a fantastic base to do anything because it teaches you how to think and solve problems which is applicable in all businesses and industries.

I have been a civil engineer for 4 years, and have the artistic talent of a potato. Civil engineering is so broad, that even AutoCad knowledge is not necessary for a lot of fields, I have only started learning it this year, and have got on perfectly well previously without it. The main requirement I think, is to be able to think logically, and come up with solutions to problems. There are always underlings to do the drawings for you!

I ,as a civil engineer consider that no, we need not be very artistic in drawing, but we must be able to interpert the meaning of each line in a drawing, and to convert our imagination our our design in the form of drawing.this means that we must know how to convert any concept into a drawing , but we need not be necessarily very artistic.there are draughtpersons for you to help you with your drawings, on Autocad .
In college the basic aim is to understand the drawings,& to give you idea to generate your own drawings.

My hand drawings were always a mess, that is why I learned Autocad. Civil drawings are not artistic drawings. There is an art to doing them and making them easy to interperate. The most important thing is that they are CORRECT!
