Why would you want to reduce immigration? Immigration is key to the economic success of most western nations, it has influenced what we eat, the houses we live in, the way we work and the way we spend our leisure time. At what point in history should ‘we’ have closed the door, after the Celts? the Saxons? The Normans? Or is it just 20th Century immigration that you are worried about? Or perhaps maybe the colour of the people (do you equally object to the Aussies and Americans wandering the streets)?
Your question would make more sense if you linked it to refugees. In which case, aid and development can help if given appropriately however it is a well known phenomena for western countries to use aid as a means of having countries economically dependant (or to use the more user friendly term – ‘to open up markets’). The cancellation of debt might help (the Live8 agenda), as would political pressure on our governments to stop plundering the natural resources of the developing world using dubious agreements with puppet despots as justification. There is a lot more but I suspect this was not the reason you asked the question.
Finally if you actually want to do something to help you could think about how you spend your money, ethical spending programmes (free-trade or cooperative type things where the farmer actually gets paid a market rate for their crops etc) actually attempt to help people make a living, and feed and educate their children. Or maybe donate a goat from one of the numerous charities that work with the community (you donate a goat the family can use and sell the milk and when the goat has a kid it is donated back into the programme). If nothing else getting involved here might make you feel like you have contributed to stemming the flow of refugees.

That's been tried and didn't seem to work.First the best way is to take away the enticements. The company's and individuals that hire the illegals should be hit so hard with fines and sanctions that they would be forced to stop that practice. We have great restrictive laws already on the books, they just need to be followed and with zero tolerance.
Second, secure our borders, build the wall if it can work as a deterrent in any way.Put the bite back into the Border Patrol, make the Justice Department do its job by backing the Border Patrol not hand cuffing it with dumb azz regulations.
Thirdly, arrest and deport the people that are marching in the streets,if they are illegals they claim to be .Go after the Marxist rabble rousers, stop them from exploiting the illegal for their own selfish agenda of take over of this country.
The country's that the illegals come from need to help themselves, one such as Mexico has many resources and has the money to help their own people but does not.So they encourage their poor to leave and become another nations illegal problem. In a perfect world each country would provide for its own people, but we do not live in a perfect world.

The best way of reducing immigration is by applying a blanket prohibition with exception only if the prospective immigrant can offer an academic, professional or practical skill that cannot by found in this country.
In order to support the expanding world population, it is becoming necessary for us all to accept a lower quality of life. Aid to any country should be conditional on the implementation of a policy of strict birth control. A similar policy could also be applied to benefits paid in the West; thereby arresting the population growth, conserving the environment and elimination the under class of wasteful eaters.

The answers people give just demonstrate how small their thinking is, as if the UK was the limit of the known world.
The EU, which is the most stable and economically sound region on the planet, already has a policy of regional development.
Like all financial development aid, it takes time, but Ireland is a prime example of a country which has grown substantially from EU investment and support.
If "true Brits" don't want to be part of the EU, why don't they go somewhere else?
Perhaps they are just unemployable losers?

Immigration per se isn't a bad thing.
The USA is built on immigrants (as is Canada). In fact, the USA's best industries (health care, computers, etc) are built on talent gathered from around the world. Therefore... why reduce the numbers?
The money would be better spent on investments into industries that are actually being productive and providing jobs, instead of into corrupt and inept governments (oxymoron?) that don't produce much of anything.
Now, if you're talking about ILLEGAL immigration, we have a different story.

the most important note right here's "unlawful". i'm pondering improving your self, yet we've regulations for a reason. Why actually have a regulation or a border if that is not any longer enforced? there is not any different u . s . on earth the position you could enter illegally and get the fashion of amenities and classic of residing you do in u . s . a .. till human beings crack down on the loose amenities presented to unlawful immigrants, the human beings who're right here legally and paying taxes are going to be footing the bill in case you opt for no longer to obey the regulation. Why no longer prepare for citizenship and then get monetary help?

So, you suggest that we allow these other countries to blackmail us? They'll finally get a handle on keeping their people from invading our country if we just send them enough money, right?
Why are we responsible for bailing out everyone when they won't help us when we need it? I am sick and tired of being used. Yes, we have a lot in this country, but charity should NEVER be government sponsored. Tell the citizens what needs to be done, and let US decide how much to send and to where.
It works over and over again. Americans are very charitable people. We give until it hurts if we understand and agree with the cause.

Are American or British?
America is a nation of imigrants. except the North American Indians.
The reason immigranrts come is because people want them there. If there was no demand there would be no imigation. It's the same in Britian, farmers want cheap labour to pick fruit, cleaning companies want cheap cleaners.
In answer to your question, there is no harm in giving financial aid to groups of people in poor countries if it is used directly to help them help themselves. Also promotion of fair trade produce is a good idea. However just giving handouts to often corrupt governments is a bad idea.
I suspect though that this still wouldn't do much to reduce imigration. The only way to stop that is to stop the people who employ them. From what I have heard and read America is full of people quite willing to emply illegal imigrants as cheap labour. These people are the cause of the problem, not the actual immigrants themselves.

No. the best way is for the, for instance, people of Mexico to rise up and protest against their sleazy, greedy so called government. It is shameful that a country would sit back and allow its people to flee illegally into another country. A country's greatest resource is its "people".
Do you think Spain would allow its people to illegally spill into France or Americans into Canada?
Mexico protect your greatest resource, offer your people a means for a better life, get rid of government greed and corruption.

lol, we have given more than enough to poor countries. nafta for one should have been huge for mexico, but the corruption there has made it next to impossible. we gave aid to somalia up until black hawk down. we gave aid to iran until the embassy hostage crisis. Every country we give aid to takes it until they get strong enough to fight, and then for some stupid reason, they fight us. forget the other countries. if we make another country as strong as us, they will attack and destroy. We seriously need to make a dmz like we did in korea along our sothern border. mines, machine guns, and no forgiveness. we're begging for a terrorist to cross the border with a nuke, begging! if we don't do something, we'll be in piss poor shape and soon.
