Information for the tree huggers: It was in my back yard yesterday where my 7 year old daughter usually plays. Animal control told me it was my problem (after they had to figure out that mountain lions actually DID exist...). So this is not a trophy hunter question, but question of keeping my loved ones safe. I would like to avoid using a huge caliber (I already own a 300 Win Mag) since I have neighbors relatively close. Will a well-placed 22 Mag do the trick? Oh, and thanks to anyone who chose to leave a REAL answer. I suggest you other idiots run around in the woods with an antler suit during deer season.

Really, we should just leave them alone unless they have become a menace. I've heard of Mountain lions being killed with both .30-30s and .22 Magnums.

If I was going to specifically hunt one down (say because it was a rogue or killing life stock) I'd probably use my Remington Model 673 Guide rifle in 6.5 Remington Magnum. That or the every handy 1892 Winchester lever action in .44 Magnum. Again, if I was specifically hunting one down I'd also take a sidearm, probably one of my Colt Python .357 Magnums. One year a large Bobcat tried to get inside a shooting blind with me. It took me about 2 seconds to realized I couldn't maneuver my Remington 700 .25-06 w/24" barrel within my blind for a shot. I'd left my Python in my cabin because... I was hunting from a blind, what the heck did a need a handgun for! Right. LOL!

are you talking about self-defense or hunting? For self defense, I would suggest a 12 gauge. At close range they are easy to get on target and carry a very sufficient punch.

for hunting, you can pick about any rifle you want. probably a minimum of 243. I've heard of people hunting with dogs and using small calibers. They tree the cat and basically wait for it to bleed to death. No use in overkill.

Well I know I wouldn't want a pissed off cat running around, so I would chose a gun I was most confident with. Also one that has plenty of stopping power for a one-shot kill. However I would also like to have a second shot fast, just in case....For cat hunting I would chose a Marlin lever-action chambered in 45-70 Govt

.7mm is a good round for elk and would most likely be a good round for mountain lion too. That and purhaps 30-06.

Why, I ask, do you even want to take down a mountain lion? Is it endangering your family? You need to ask yourself, "Gee, what caliber would take a full grown man out?" There's your answer. I think that you ought to go after him with a baseball bat, now THERE is sport, great white hunter!!!! Get a job!!!!
