I just found out that last night my 16 year old son called a 24 hour counselor because he's having trouble get over a girl who broke up with him. I would really like to help him, but I don't know what to do or say. He's very depressed.

A friend of his told me about his conversation with the counselor. I did talk to him and let him know that i was there anytime he needed to talk. His Stepdad also talked to him and I think he's doing much better now! Thanks to all of you for your help!!

Just be there for him. It's possible that he is embarassed sharing this info with you, as you are his mother. The best thing my mom did for me when I went through a terrible break up in high school, was simply understanding that I was in pain and I needed to treated "with care" for a while. He will heal. First loves are so hard, remember? Good luck!

Oh my dear I dread the time that is going to happen to me. First talk to him without mentioning that you learned it via the counselor-but how did the counselor tell you that its breach of confidentiality! Ask him what is bothering him, don't be judgmental and don't say anything bad about the girl as that may agitate him.

Take him out to a coffee shop or a restaurant, give him time and encourage him to do a new hobby. If he wants to cry, just hold him without saying anything, assure him that time will heal his pain.

Hopefully it wont get him long to get over it and good luck.

Take him out of town for the week end and just the two of you have a good time and spend some quality time together. That should get his mind off of her for awhile. And it will give you some time to be there for him.

Just be there for him, be understanding of his mood and behavior, and don't bug him. Just knowing you're there for him and that you wouldn't "dump" him will make him feel better, and he will move on, as hard as this may seem to him right now.

You can also propose new activities and trips... but calmly, not too suddenly. He needs his time.

you have to let him cry it out and he will move on. if he doesnt move on, he needs to seek help so he wont do anything drastic to himself.
