Those who are born again, love God and neighbor. Those who seek God fear His rejection. Those who are spiritually blind are oblivious to their eternal destiny. The typical Christian testimony will go something like this.

Natural human - Blind to spiritual things. Seeking personal lusts through personal decisions without regard to God or others (except as others might help or hurt their own goals.)

Spiritually awakened - Aware of God and his justice. Aware of the depravity of their own lifestyle. Fearful of God's wrath in the form of eternal punishment. Sometimes called the "spirit of bondage."

Reborn - Also called regenerated, converted, justified, or "saved." This is where loving God begins. We become children of God and joint-heirs with Christ. We act out of love toward God and neighbor as the Holy Spirit strengthens us. This comes by grace and not by our own works. But, we must seek and accept God's grace. (sometimes called the Spirit of adoption.)

Sanctification - A process that begins with being reborn or justified. We begin to live more holy lives, not only because we are changed by the Holy Spirit, but also because we are given the free will to serve God and live a life pleasing to Him rather than having our wills bound tightly to the chains of sin (self-absorption.)

There are variations on the theme, but fear is usually our first response to God's revelation. Further revelations cause us to love selflessly. Christians aren't perfect, but they are trying to improve in a manner prescribed in the Holy Bible. This is possible only because we receive Divine help. You can, too. But first, you must seek.

Romans 8:13-15 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We are to fear God in that we are to understand that he is the Most High over all the earth and he has the power and the absolute right to do anything he wishes with all his creation (including us). It is a healthy fear based on knowing our own limitations and the fact that he has almost none. We also love him because as we know him we come to understand that he has loved us and that everything he has ever done has been for our benefit. Even the fact that he is allowing Satan to rule the earth at this time is a tool to teach us that we cannot rule ourselves or have happiness without God.

Why ask a question that you intend to answer? I say you're wrong. I say that God is far more infinite, loving and merciful than we are so there's no reason to fear him in a literal sense of the word. You can fear his discipline without fearing him. God is a loving God, I don't understand why people can't see that. I guess it stems from all the Bible thumping in America.

Nothing to fear(hath torment) about or from the "merciful" God of all grace in "heaven"("higher than the heavens"). But it's notably a "fearful" thing to "fall"(from grace) into either of left/right "hands" of a law/law God on "high" in plural divided law law "heavens".

As for doubleminded(unstable) "Abraham Abraham", he would have killed his own son if not stopped. Not to mention Abraham is among the hall of shame of Heb 11 notes these all died and received not the promise; And To The Hebrews concludes the same as Holy Bible containing Old & New Testaments concludes:

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ WITH YOU ALL. AMEN.

Both...it's called respect. When I grew up, I loved my dad because he always took care of me and did what he could to make sure I grow up with a good sense of morals. I feared him b/c I knew if I disobeyed him, there would be punishment.

Like my dad, my FATHER (God) is a loving God, but he is also a Righteous God! It is the fear and love for him that keeps me a moral person.

You are looking at an English translation of the word not the original Hebrew. If you are really interested in that question (which I doubt) research it from that aspect. In short though it means respect not afraid.

We love God and we fear God. Not in the sense that we are afraid of Him (since we have Him we don't need to fear anything). But fearing Him in reverence and awe of His mighty power and holiness.

You should Love God.
Fear being without Him.

Fear with God is the amount of respect that you have.
It is not the same as being afraid of a person or situation.
