First and foremost has to be responsibility.
The willingness to work a job, even if you don't love the job.
Paying bills on time, and letting the things you "want" wait until a later date.
The willingness to do chores and things without having to be told.
When you screw up, admit it. Don't try to hide what you've done wrong.
Putting others before yourself.
Willing to sacrifice what you want for another's needs.
The ability to compromise, and see other people's points of view.
Tolerance for other people's opinions.
The lack of self absorbed behavior.
Willing to put dreams into perspective. While you shouldn't loose them, they shouldn't rule your life either.
Commitment, not just to a relationship, although that's very important, but also to follow through and stick with things.
Dependability, be there when you say you will. Do things that you say you are going to do.
Accept the consequences of your actions. When you've done something bad, take what punishment you've earned.

The list goes on and on.

One thing I look for is the ability to do the right thing even if you don't want to. For example clean your room you dont want to but you do it because it needs to be done...

Also the ability to follow a plan and do whats best for everyone and not just you.

To have ability to think of others. To put others before yourself.
