this technique is good until next year 2007; it should activate by end of this year until next year. locate the southeast most part of the house, put 4 green living plants at that location. when they go yellow, replace them. do not put the plants if the area is a bedroom. this will stimulate your social life.
regarding the imbalance of chi in your house, as i have said before that there are no shortcuts to fengshui. you cannot just put a dragon statue at a particular location and everything will be fine. it does not work that way. you need to consult a fengshui master or a fengshui auditor to help you out.
there are many fengshui theories out there to determine what is wrong with your house and how to remedy them. the technique mentioned above is just good for 2007, and when 2007 is over, you need to take the plants out or something else might happen.

From the feng shui perspective, you need to explain what the layout of the living room is and what kind of colors you have there. As a general rule cold colors like blues and violets aren't very conducive to having guests, you want to have yellows and oranges (not red though). Brown is definitely out, you want bright colors. Also do you have any pets?? Most people that have pets don't realize the odors their house may have, while an outsider might be very aware of it. Plants are always a good way to make rooms more inviting and they will help with the air quality. Make sure they have big leaves, don't get cactuses! they'll have the oposite effect.

I agree...don't worry about super-clean. I personally find that intimidating. I live in a perpetually cluttered house with three dogs (one over 150 pounds), a cat, and numerous little critters in tanks that get taken care of before the cleaning does...and despite the fact that we're at least twenty minutes from anywhere, people just show up here almost every night because they like the laid-back atmosphere. Granted, you don't need clutter and giant dogs, but don't worry about some dust on the mantle or a coffee ring on the kitchen counter the moment they happen. georgia b has some good ideas for a more organic approach to decorating, too.

Maybe it's too much like a museum. If you're putting so much effort into cleaning, you may be doing the opposite of what you intend. Decorate with more texture and natural elements: rock, wood, furry blankets, and lots of pillows. Have a water feature near the entry. Have a finger-food or fondue party with lots of wine. Mix and match a little. Don't be too "Martha Stewart." Relax and let people help themselves.
I've had the same problem in the past. I've tried so hard that my guests felt that I was too worried about everyone's comfort and it made them uncomfortable. I'm also a gourmet cook and some of them actually said that it embarrassed them. You need to just find that balance. Get people comfortable, then you can always step it up.

I'm not particularly familiar with feng shui- however, there are other steps you can take to cleanse the space of energetic problems. You may want to perform a house blessing ceremony. If you are Christian and have a church you can ask someone from the church to come and anoint and cleanse the house for you. However, you can do it yourself if you'd rather not go that route.
You, of course, want the house to be nice and clean ahead of time (which it sounds like it already is). You may even want to use some kind of herbal infusion for the water you use when washing. Some great ones might be Wisteria or honeysuckle. In order to make floor washes like this you need to use a pinch of alcohol, and strain the herbs through a cheesecloth into the water. This infusions is said in folklore to rid negativity and to heal people, places, and/or things. You can use this floor wash and sprinkle it around the house (or actually use it to wash with). The basic formula is: 8 oz. water, 1/4 oz. isopropyl alcohol, and your herbs selected. (Approx. a tsp of herbs altogether)
After you have done that you may wish to smudge the house. The most traditional herb used is sage. For a more comprehensive explanation of what smudging is (the burning of ritual incense to cleanse an object, space, or person) you can visit the following link which will bring you to an article I wrote about it:

You may not want to use sage, however, because some people really dislike the smell. (I love it, but my family despises it, LOL). You can use lavendar, or any store bought incense, although I would mostly recommend sweetgrass or cedar, which is still one of the sacred herbs used most traditionally. When you smudge you want to open all the doors and windows in the house to allow all the negative energy you are trying to get rid of to escape from your home.
You want to visualize a lot of white light in your home, in each room. One time I helped my aunt do a house blessing where we lit a white candle and walked from room to room shedding light in every corner and every closet to chase away any dark, nasty energy that we didn't want in the house. It was a wonderful ritual and was a very nice addition to the house blessing/cleansing.
The other thing you can try is using sound to cleanse the space. It requires you to have a rattle or some other kind of hand percussion instrument (a small drum would work as well) and begin to make sound while walking or dancing around the room beginning in the center and making a spiral outwards in a counter-clockwise direction. By going counter-clockwise it banishes the energy that you are trying to get rid of. After finishing your dance (you should attempt to end at the open door to the room and still keep all the windows open, again, for the same reason as above) use your palms to check all the corners and spaces for energy voids or any stubborn harmful energy that may be sticking to the area. If this happens do more rattling and/or drumming until you feel it is gone. Once the room seems cleansed you should sit in its center and visualize the enter room filled with brilliant white light. Once you've done all that trace an equal-armed cross in the center of the room with you hand to seal the cleansing.
You can use any combination or all of these methods if you want to cover all your bases. I'm including as a source the book I learned a good portion of this from. You can probably find it at your local bookstore, and if not you can order it online through amazon. I hope this helps you out!
Feel free to message me if you have any questions regarding my advice!
Blessings and Light

Nothing wrong in having a clean home but sometimes that can be intimidating to others. Maybe they are frightened of messing it up and that's why they don't come around... Invite some people over for coffee and cake and just chill out ...see if that makes any difference.
