Verification of eligibility to take the GED test

Before testing you must produce two forms of identification. One needs to be a picture ID such as a driver’s license or passport.

You must confirm this information and attest to this information with your signature:

* 18 years of age, or 16 with special documentation from an employer, college admissions office, military recruiting officer, or director of state institution.
* Not currently enrolled in school
* Have not received a high school credential from any state
* Have not earned a GED in any other state.
* Resident of Pennsylvania

Cost of GED test

Each test site determines its cost to administer the GED. The usual range is $40-$60 for the full battery of five tests. Test sites may also charge for those who re-test.

Test times

Each subject area has a specific time limit.

The total time is seven hours and five minutes, but you don’t have to take the entire test at one time.

Test centers are allowed to determine whether they will administer one test at a time or all at once. You must contact the test sites for their schedules. If the test site in your area does not test according to your needs, you may look for another test site and provide the information concerning previous test scores.

Retesting

If you don’t earn sufficient points to pass, you may retest and your highest score will be counted towards your total points. You may take each test only three times a year, so chief examiners may encourage you to attend a GED preparation class to improve your chances of obtaining a higher score.

GED accommodations

If you have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities that would negatively affect your ability to take the GED, you may request special accommodations. Each request is considered on an individual basis and the chief examiner at the GED test site can provide you with the proper forms. The four forms to be used to request accommodations are:

Forms are available from GED examiners and must be completed by the appropriate professional, a physician, or licensed psychologist.

GED 2002

In January 2002, the new GED test was introduced. If you tested before 2002 and did not pass all five tests, your test scores are no longer valid.

New Spanish and French versions were introduced in January 2004. At that time all previous scores from partially completed tests became invalid.

Requesting a GED transcript

You may fill out a GED transcript request online, then mail in the form and $3.00 fee. Request a GED transcript here.

The processing of GED transcripts is delayed when incorrect fees or incorrect forms of payment are mailed to the GED Section, Commonwealth Diploma Program.

Requests for GED transcripts MUST be accompanied by a MONEY ORDER or CASHIER”S CHECKS made out in the amount of $3.00 per transcript. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted and may delay the processing of your request. Money orders or cashier's checks that exceed the correct amount will be returned. It will take approximately six (6) weeks to process a requests. If you can visit the GED office in Harrisburg with the $3.00 money order and a photo ID in hand, a transcript will be issued while you wait. Duplicate diplomas are not issued. Most higher education institutions and employers accept transcripts.

When sending a request please remember to include:

* Name at time of testing
* Approximate date of testing
* Birth date
* Social security number
* Address where transcripts are to be sent.
* Phone number where you can be reached during the day.
* $3.00 money order or cashier’s check for each transcript.
