I have installed a Micronet wireless router that routes to the internet via a iburst modem. I assume I will need a server for this to work.

Some routers will allow you to ban access from specific network MAC addresses so you can ban abusers, but this can be easily bypassed by most tech savy users. There really isn't a foolproof way to ban someone from an open network. I'd highly recommend using WPA or WPA2 encryption to just keep unwanted people out.

If you insist on running an open network, a better strategy would be to see if your router supports QOS (Quality of Service). That way you can throttle the bandwidth to avoid abuse altogether.

you dont need a server the router broadcasts the signal. as long as the computers have wireless adapters they will be able to connect to your network. if you want to have control over who can access your network there are a couple of ways to do that. one way is to wep or wpa protect your network and only give the key code to the people you want on your network. most routers also have a feature that you can set up where you assign what MAC addresses can log onto your network. if you do it that way you dont need the protection the only people accessing will be the ones you put in the MAC address for. if you feel like someone is online to much or whatever you consider abusing you can either take thier MAC address off the router or if you do it the other way you can change the key and dont give it to who ever is abusing your network. good luck

You'll definitely need to route through a server, using proxy/firewall software that is highly configurable. Consider, though, the fine print of your ISP service contract. If they catch you, you may not only get booted off their service, but may find yourself facing a lawsuit or worse, criminal charges. Most contracts specifically state ONE computer, ONE IP address (with an additional monthly charge per computer if you need it), and no servers running (unless you've got a business account that specifically allows servers).

You can have firewall/access settings on the router configuration, log it to the root page by accessing http://192.168.0.1 or refer to your modem manual for further information.
