Originally long state and interstate roadways were sided by grassy areas or "parks". This allowed travels to stop frequently to cool off their new motorcars as well as have lunches along long drives. With speeds being quite low, a 20 miles trip could take several hours. The roadways became known as "parkways".

I never go parking in my driveway, I do, though go parking on the parkway... I just try not to get caught.

I thougth it was the other way around. Maybe that explains the parking tickets and why the road always leads back home?
