If you are close and want to spend time with her you could take her and family to a theme park or the movies for a excellent day as they grow up so fast and you need to cherish the time that you have with your family or a jewellery or clothes gift certificate if you dont know what to get her. Or you cant go wrong with a cute stuffed toy even at 20 I went all gushy over a plush teddy bear

I always give board games. I hate seeing kids in a video-game coma, spaced out and isolated. Board games require other players (socialization) and thinking (problem solving skills, general knowledge). My family really enjoys Worst Case Scenario. We have a lot of fun learning how to fend off shark attacks! There's also a very useful question that asks how to escape an abductor. As far as a game just for entertainment, Toys R Us has brought back Mystery Date, a very old game for girls. It's so superficial, but so much fun. Players "build" an outfit then open a door to see who her mystery date is. If they are dressed for the same date, the player wins. Good luck!

My 12 year old niece is into lots of bangle-dangly jewelry, lipstick, nail polish and make-up.

Why don't you just ask her mom what's on her birthday list and get a gift off that.
