I am just interested to know - if fellow Catholics agree with him or not?

What do others think of his opposition?

And why does the pope oppose it?

I have cerebal palsy and I would love the chance to have stem cell - it would give me freedoms and ablities that others take for granted. I don't see what the problem is.

this might be stirring it a bit, but the church is being hypocritical cause it allowed Hitler to kill thousands of disabled people, it only some in church opposed him, (God bless them), but the rest turned their backs. Is it just me or is it too faced?

Going by what some of the answers being given people have no idea, I would say no to killing of anything just for research, but they are now doing research on the Umbilical cord, but read the following
The collection process takes place after delivery when the cord has been separated from your newborn infant. In no way does it interfere with the birth of your baby. Your attending physician, nurse or midwife collects the cord blood utilising a sterile kit provided by Cord Partners. The collected cord blood is sealed in a specially designed package and delivered to our laboratory for testing and processing. Finally, the sample is cryogenic ally stored until it needs to be retrieved.

Now maybe some of the idiots may realise how this would help others without putting anyone at risk, I to have someone who could befit from this, maybe if some of these others had the same problems they would change their minds.

Before the pope thinks about the issues of terminating a bunch of cells, he should perhaps think about the risks of extinction due to overpopulation. Every embryo that can be used to keep people healthy while they live is good. Producing any more children (particularly in families corrupted by primitive superstition) should be discouraged by any and all means until the world population is reduced by around 95%. Then the race will once again have a chance of survival.

The Catholic Church is not opposed to all stem cell research.

Catholics only oppose "embryonic" stem cell research where the embryo is the result of an abortion.

It is not morally correct to kill a human being to help another human being. The end does not justify the means.

Catholics are pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."

This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
- All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms.
- The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in fitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning
- The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanazia
- Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty
- The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues.

With love in Christ.

As a Catholic I agree with the pope UNLESS there is some way to do this without interferring or 'harvesting' babies in the womb for the stem cells. That's the main issue. Improving others lives at the cost of another helpless soul.

The Pope is not opposed to stem cell research. He is opposed to the killing of preborn human beings in order to obtain stem cells for research. Thou Shalt Not Kill. Stem cells are available from other sources and the Pope has no problem whatsoever in research done on cells obtained through morally acceptable means.

The Pope is opposed to killing off human embyos. However, I heard there was a way to do stem cell research from the imbilical cord of newborn babies. You don't have to kill anyone. I'm in favor of that method.

This is just another political game, Enough stem cells to work with are available in the placenta, the discarded part. No harm done to anyone.
Both sides are guilty of keeping this information away from us. It's a power grab.
Shame, shame, shame!
