When Automobile Manufacturers set-up their Warranty Policy, they normally use 12,000 as their amount per year (3 years/36,000 miles, 4 years/48,000 miles, etc.)... From my experience, this is really an unrealistic number... I'd say more like 18,000 to 20,000 a year wouldn't be too awful...

all depends how the car is used I cover only 8000 miles per year some cover 10 times that when buying a car the engine noise tells you what you need to know check the engine oil is clean listen for rattles and ticking noises from the engine I have bought cars with 112000 on the clock and never had any problems treat the car right and it will treat you right, even newish cars have problems, to finish? the average milage is now around 14 000 owing to motorway driving

For that year, 4 years old, I would not buy a secondhand car with more than 50,000 miles on the clock. If you have no reason to believe that it has been 'clocked' (mileage reduced) and there is between 25,000 and 30,000 miles, you will be doing well. Check the fitted carpets, not the loose ones, which will give you an idea of the previous owner. Beware too, if the previous owner had it for less than 6 months....................... p.s. Some of the previous answers are ridiculous..........
