With bird flu and all, I was wondering how safe it is. What if they are unsoiled and I leave them to air and disinfect naturally in the sun? Or, how else?

That is a good question. I would say yes since you will be covering them with paint or other material.
I haven't heard of anyone getting sick handling
egg crates. If you are concerned wipe the cartons with a water and clorine bleach mix then let dry.

I dont think there would be a problem in regards to bird flu.... however be sure that the children working with them do not have a food allergy to egg... for some children the tiniest bit of contact with egg (which we may not be able to see) can cause an anaphylactic reaction....

Yes Chicken eggs have been radiated for the past few years to eliminate bacteria. Use a little Lysol Disinfecting Spray if you would like.

I would say only if it's the plastic kind that you can easily clean. The old cardboard ones are questionable, and not easy to clean without them disintegrating.
