Do you know what the allergies are? It depends on what the dog is reacting to, preservatives, corn, starch etc..

Ask your vet what s/he recommends.

Cocker Spaniel Food Allergies

I too would guess allergies. Pedigree is an extremely poor quality food and it's good that you are are gradually switching her off to a better food. Try putting some olive oil or cod liver oil in her food as well. It will help moisturize her skin. If after a few weeks after being on the better stuff (without the Pedigree), if she is still itchy then take her to the vet and see if she has sensitive skin or any other problems.

Have you gone to a vet? My dog also has allergies. She was on a steroid for a while which really helped. But they can't stay on them for long. She is on prescription dog food now. An antihistimine 3 times a day. I also supplement her with apple cider vinegar tabs 2 times a day. Omega 3 fish oil tabs are suppose to be great. It takes 3 months to find out if a new dog food is working or not. The vet can also give you special shampoo to keep the itches away. Good Luck!!

Only a vet can tell you if it is or is not allergies. It could be a number of things. We've gotten dog food that made our dog sick so we switched brands. Then he got sick again, found out it was whip worms. So you can't diagnose your aninmal on you own.

Going to the vet is the best step in aiding your Cocker Spaniel. If you dog has food allergies they will prescribe a special diet.

My dog has a laundry list of food allergies. She is allergic to chicken, lamb, liver, wheat, and eggs.

I feed her Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice. There are others out there. Wellness makes an excellent whitefish based allergy food.

My dog has food allergies too. I have found that Dick Van Patten's "Natural Balance" is a great brand. They have several "non typical protien" dog foods- like Salmon, Venison, Duck, and an egg and soy formula. These dog foods can be bought at Petco or almost any pet store. They are "Ultra Premium" dog foods and contain none of the "filler" type foods that dogs are often allergic to- such as corn fillers or wheats.

He really is in pain so I hope this can be cleared up quickly. First eliminate all beef and wheat. Rawhide chews are beef. Most treats contain beef. Feed foods with lamb, chicken, salmon, vegetables, rice. (If you have time to cook for him, that would be great. I make a big pot of chicken or turkey "soup", with brown rice, when it is on sale. If there are still allergy symptoms after 2 weeks, eliminate either the salmon or chicken. Keep doing this until you find what works for the cutie.

The best dog food out there is a brand called Innova.
Theu are organic, use no by-products, no fillers, and offer several varieties of foods - their Evo line contains no grain whatsoever, and their regular line is 100% wheat free and even comes in small bites (great for small dog owners). One of my dogs has bad wheat and preservative allergies and this is by far the best food out there AND he can eat it.

Innova is so confident in their foods you can actually use a tool on their site to compare ingredients of their food to any other.

the first thing is to determine if its food allergy or environmental allergies. if it is food allergies, you need to find a food with a novel source of protein. its usually the protein that causes the allergic response. novel proteins are things that the dog has never seen before. some foods, only available at your vet are, fish/potato, venison, rabbit, duck, and even kangaroo. if all these fail, there are other foods, also through your vet, that have synthetic proteins. if its environmental, allergy testing and/or allergy shots may be the answer.

My hubby's dog has allergies too. Try to find a food that has no corn. The main ingredients should be lamb and rice. You want the main ingredient, or the first ingredient on the ingredient label to be meat! Lamb is very easily digested, and rice is much easier on the tummy than corn. We use Maxximum in a black back from Wal-Mart, the lamb and rice formula, and it worked wonders on hubby's dog. He actually grew back hair and everything. Good luck with yours.
