I have heard this all my life but need a true explanation and not hearsay. I have lost 25 lbs through reducing calories and power walking daily. Part of my dieting has been taken care of by replaceing excess calories by eating shaved ice when I get the "munchies". Shaved ice feels like solid food and numbs my taste buds slightly but I only have about 16 to 32 oz (volume a day)... I call it the "iceman" diet : ) Sounds corny but it works...

It’s not bad for you per say, it’s bad for your teeth. It wears the enamel off your teeth over time.

Congrads on the 25 lbs though! Where do you get shaved ice, did you make it?

I have heard a dentist warn about chewing on ice because the cold followed by warm food could cause fractures in tooth enamel. I do know that in Siberia persons are advised when they come indoors from the extreme cold (40 below or more!) to not drink hot beverages or they could damage their teeth.

A dentist told me that popcorn causes the most broken teeth. Ice is also brittle, and hard, and it could break a tooth weakened by decay or large fillings. With large fillings there is only a shell of tooth supporting the fillling. My dentist advised me to replace my mercury fillings with gold fillings because, he said mercury amalgam shrinks with age leaving the fragile remainder of the tooth unsupported and prone to fracture.

The reason you were told not to eat ice isnt cause of the ice, its because of your teeth as some ice is frozen sooo solid that it can break the enamal of your teeth leading to decay. Eating shaved ice is an excellent diet technique since most of us dont drink enough water and as long as the ice is made with good water I dont see any problem with it.

Go Iceman! I think that what you have heard your whole life is the hearsay. Eating water is just fine as long as your not breaking teeth in ice cubes or choking to death....go for it. Great job!

It's those same idiots that tell you you'll get arthritis from cracking your knuckles, or that you have to wait 1 hr after eating before you can go swimming.

I've been eating ice for 38 years and I've never had any negative consequences. My teeth are just fine, according to my dentist, thank you very much!

I was always told ice is terrible to chew on because it makes your teeth brittle and easily chipped/cracked.
