In the west the women rights are governed by the Constitution and not the religion. USA is a secular state, where church and state are two separate entities, and when the element of spirituality is absence from a society rapes and beatings are the common occurrences . Islam on the other hand teaches the spirituality and the the laws for the women rights are set in the Holy Quran. People do break laws everywhere, but in the absence of fear of God the laws are broken more often in the west.

These things happen in each culture. The difference with the US is that we have a culture that (generally) speaks out against these injustices. Not all cultures have an environment conducive to a woman being able to step up and speak out when she has been victimized. They simply must take it and live with it--it won't make news headlines, they will not by any means find a support group, it's just not talked about. I think the fact that these issues CAN BE discussed here means that we're making progress, though the fact they're still talked about at all is just sad.

Oh yes, total respect. If forcing the Burka on them, or stoning them, or transferring the burden of proof on the women after a rape. Oh yes, treat them as second class citizens, deny education and make them share a husband. Wow - real respect!

The opportunity to rape is more available in free countries, where women move freely in public. In conservative societies women often hide the fact that they were raped, because society tends to accuse raped women of misbehavior.
