For some, especially non- native speakers, it would have to be the pronounciation.

For some of my friends however, they found memorising the strokes in the characters, as well as the order of the strokes, rather much of a chore.

Personally, i haven't had much problems with learning of Mandarin, except for the fact that my interest wasn't really there.

Most people will tell you it's learning the thousands of characters used in the writing.

Personally, I have more trouble with the tones used in speaking, I can't recognize them, and even less reproduce them correctly.

pronunciation of certian words. Some of the words are difficult to pronunce and it has so many characters that its difficult to remember them.

Hmm... the different words/expressions that have slightly different meanings when two or more characters are paired together. I think it is called "peici" (配词).
