The major reason why people aren't traveling to the UK from the United States is a matter of attitude not money. People in the UK have been extremely vocal and in some cases downright rude in their opinions of Americans. This has an effect, just ask the French. To those people who keep posting about how strong the currency is apparently you missed the fact that the dollar is rallying against all currency based on a stronger than expected consumer confidence index. I love the false superiority of some of these posts. Currently the Euro is trading at roughly 1.26 US dollars. This isn't that huge of a gap, but the attitude belied by posting this contention is a good example of the attitude that is keeping Americans away from Britain at this time. And we are the ones accused of arrogance for having national pride.
Current News:
In what was an otherwise uneventful night of trade in the FX market, news that the UK Office of National Statistics made a serious error in its inflation data calculations rocked the pound which fell more than 100 points off session highs tumbling below the 1.8800 level.

Are you complaining about this?
Some Americans are still making it over but a lot of the more stupid and easily swayed ones are staying away for a whole host of reasons (most listed above). Besides which quite a few Americans don't like the UK that much, think everything is bigger and better in the United States of Arrogance and think that it their duty to inform you continually that everything is bigger and better back at home.
So less morons and arrogant sods are turning up, big loss. We still seem to get some of the more intelligent Americans that can see through all the crap and they are the only ones I want to meet anyway.

There is a number of reasons. First, as others have pointed out, the dollar has just become so weak against the pound. The exchange rate used to be £1=$1.66 during the glory days of the Clinton era but then King George II came along, squandered a huge budget surplus on a tax cut and allowed our trade deficit to balloon to a record-high, which is the main reason for the dollar's weakness (though Bush's people will try to blame this on the Chinese yuan being pegged to the dollar). Now the exchange rate is £1=$1.88.
Second, I think a fear of terrorism is also probably keeping a lot of Yanks from hopping across the pond. The underground bombings of 7 July (in additon to the recent arrests by your police) seemed to have spawned an unfair stereotype among Americans that the British government is lax on immigration and and that the U.K. has become a breeding ground for mini terrorist cells. I don't believe this to be true myself, but I think a lot of my fellow Americans belong to this school of thought.
A third factor is the skyrocketing price of oil (the one issue Americans love to moan and b-tch about more than any other) which has forced Americans to trim their budgets and scale back their holiday plans.
Having said that, I've always felt my fellow Americans are hypocrites for complaining about gas prices when I consider what you folks pay for your petrol over there.

Nope the best part about England tourism...... well you do have that lovely tunnel that gets you to the fun places.

Most likely it's becasue most amreicans are sick and TIRED of the hassles at airports. We're tired of being treated like criminals just to get on a plane. WE didn't do anything, yet WE are being punished. But then if they can't kill us, the next best thing for a terrorist is to disrupt our lives and what better disruption than making americans be treated like criminals by their own government. Score one for Al Qaida.

They stayed home and toured a good country. With all the minorities in England committing crimes at epidemic rates, why spend good money to go there. We can stay here and be safer.

Simple, the US dollar is relatively weak against the pound at the moment... It makes already high UK prices seem extremely expensive in dollar terms...
