Mechanical Engineers typically deal with anything that moves. That includes machines like cars or moving fluids or manufacturing. If you get outside of design there are endless possibilities of what you can do. Marketing, sales, training, business, consulting. Having a P.Eng. holds a lot of weight in Canada and will get you far in your career. Salary greatly depends on your location, larger cities will have higher salaries as well it depends on your responsibilities and tasks. In a small town manufacturing company as an Engineering Manager you could make as little as $80,000 but as a consultant in a large city your salary has no limits (especially if you become a partner in a large firm).

Mechanical engineering is a professional engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It requires a solid understanding of key concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Practitioners of mechanical engineering, known as mechanical engineers, use these principles and others in the design and analysis of automobiles, aircraft, heating & cooling systems, buildings and bridges, industrial equipment and machinery, and much more

My husband is a mechanical engineer and works on the trains. He has also worked in precision engineering and in a crisp factory and wool factory.
Basically a mechanical engineer works with any sort of machines doing the electrics etc.
It requires at least 4yr training and pay depends on the firm you work for.
It can also be very mucky job.

Mechanical engineering is a very broad field that involves the application of physical principles for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is made up of a number of subdisciplines concerned with the mechanics, kinematics (movement), and energy of physical objects. Practitioners of mechanical engineering, known as mechanical engineers, use principles such as heat, force, and the conservation of mass and energy in contributing to the design of vehicles and aircraft, heating & cooling systems, buildings and bridges, industrial equipment and machinery, and much more.

The process of mechanical engineering is optimization: engineers strive to optimize the cost, ease, durability, safety, and overall usefulness of objects. This process can be as simple as the design of a chair for comfort or as complex as the optimization of a turbocharged engine for speed. It can be as small as the cutting of a nano-sized gear or as large as the assembly of a supertanker used to carry oil around the world.

Modern analysis and design processes in mechanical engineering are aided by various computational tools including FEA, CFD, and CAD/CAM. Manufacturing is accomplished with the aid of machines including robots, milling machines, CNCs and lathes.
