I feel this is more of an attention getter than a mental state. Some people thrive for attention and unfortunately will do anything to get it.

I feel that there are four kinds of explanation for this 1) Some people seem to be genetically predisposed to worry about everything. 2) a person could be older, or have had illnesses 3) People may hear of various problems 4) Mislabelling by one or more other people who do not have all the facts.

my exbrother inlaw's girlfriend is a hypochondriac. If it isn't something with her then it is something she makes up with one of her kids. She even has the kids acting this way now. What I have found with them is that if everything is going ok for all of them then they feel they aren't getting enough attention and they feel a need to create drama. They don't like someone else to be in the spotlight so if something happens to one of my kids and everyone is worried about them or talking about them then these people have to create something that "has happened" to them so that they don't feel left out.
