Sure working out five days in a week is fine, but not five days in a row. If you want to have your weekends free, just lift 4 days a week. If you want to lift mon through fri, just do what you suggested alternating upper and lower body, but I'd suggest that you alternate pressing, then pulling, then legs. Just start off the next week with the sequence that is next. For example pressing mon, pulling, tues, legs, wed, thurs, pressing, friday, pulling, monday, legs.

A 5 day training week is ok, as long as you're giving time for each muscle group to heal up. Some say muscles take 2-3 days to heal, others say 5-7. It's based more on your body and lifestyle IMO. I run 3 days a week in the morning then hit the weights in the afternoon, my split is like this.

Monday - Legs (nobody trains legs on Monday so I get free reign of the equipment,)
Tuesday - Chest and Forearms
Wednesday - Backs and Traps
Thursday - Shoulders and Triceps
Friday - Abs and Biceps

I focus on compound lifts (dead lifts, squats, bent over barbell rows, bench, pull ups etc) to help work secondary muscles. I pick the 3 days I run in the morning as my schedule doesn't always allow it. Since I'm looking to gain mass and strength I'm doing 4-6 reps and 2-3 sets with a heavy weight. I take Saturdays and Sundays off.

I workout 6 days a week, but I do weight lifting every other day. It's ok to do cardio every day of the week, you just don't want to do weight lifting every day. For example, I'll lift weights Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sun, and the other 2 days I only do cardio. Your muscles do need a break from the weights.

Hey since you have so much time on your hands can you work out one day for me? I hate exercise. LOL
All things in moderation. Spending some part of each day exercising is healthy. I think it would be a problem if that's all you did and didn't spend time socializing with friends and family or pursuing other interests.
