If you hate hospitals, you're out of luck. Either bite the bullet and get the cast put on or suffer.

hi.
i know from experiance how painful both broken bones and snapped / torn tendons and ligaments are!!! snapped ligaments can be just as painful sometimes more painful than a break, you may not be able to put any weight on the injured foot, this doesn't mean it is a break.
it is not very wise to be putting a cast on yourself as you may set your foot at the wrong angle and give yourself much worse problems for a long time you also get a lot of muscle wastage when you are in a cast!
if it is a sprain / strain after the initial few days when the swelling is at it's worst you will need to keep the joint mobile, doing excercises such as pointing your toes, rotataing your ankle etc, to build the strength back up.
if i were you i would follow the doctor's advice - remember they didn't go to medical school for 5 + years for nothing!
the best way to treat it yourself is by using the P.R.I.C.E treatement....
Prevent the injury from getting worse, ie, don't do anything to aggrevate it.
Rest the the injured foot so as not to make it worse
Ice the injured foot ... get a damp tea towel or handtowel put ice cubes or a bag of frozen peas etc in the towel fold the towel over to make a package and put this on your foot for 10 mins or so and repeat every couple of hours.... it will hurt like hell!!! but it will greatly reduce any inflammation.
Compression - apply a tubigrip bandage during the day (take it off at night when you go to bed)
Elevation - sit with your foot up on a chair or something, makesure that your foot is above the level of your hip.
if this treatment doesn't improve the situation after a couple of days go back to your doctor, but definately don't get the plaster of paris out and try to make your own cast!
a helpful website might be www.sportsinjuryclinic.net
hope this has helped

You cannot do it yourself....For one you cannot get the same types of casting matierals that the docs use. Also they dont just goop it on there so it resempbles soemthing of a boot cast. There is a method to casting. In addition, if you have an y injury on your foot they wont cast you they will give you a boot to wear instead. This adds more compression to the injury and you can walk on it after time. IT keeps it more protected.
This whole thing is wierd if you went to the doctors and you were told ligaments have snapped which is very serious the doctor would of then directed you to the hospital to get it casted or booted or even surgery. I think you are full of BS

If you have "snapped some ligaments" it sure is gonna hurt! You need appropriate exercise and rest - see a physiotherapist. If you haven't had an x-ray you should , maybe, try to arrange one with a second opinion.
Plantar fasciitis, heel spur and other conditions can cause also cause "really sore feet" it depends where the pain is being experienced.
As an RN I would always say if you ain't happy with the Doctor's opinion get a second Doctor's opinion - it is your body.
Don't cast it yourself get appropriate advice, this web-link is a starting place.

Did they tell you a cast or a bandage to wrap it in? The only reason to have a cast is to repair a broken bone. You can go to Wal Mart or any drugstore and get a ACE bandage or a foot wrap. They have all sizes. That is what they usually recommend. They even have already made foot and elbow wraps that are very tight for activities.
I would think your doctor would have put a cast on you if he wanted you in a cast.

If you were already at the doctors and it is not broken then you really dont need a cast. If you still think that something is wrong, get a copy of your x-rays and take it to an Orthopedic (bone doctor) You could just wrap it in an ace bandage and rest your foot.

you could buy a 'splint' from the chemist but really you should get your foot checked out at hospital, otherwise if there is any longterm damage left untreated you could have alot of problems later on with walking and shooting pains etc etc etc or problems with it not healing correctly becasue it hadnt been strapped up in a specific way to aid the healing so that there is minimal or no latsing damage. The hospital can supply you with crutches and the right kind of cast etc etc, plus some of the dr's are really fit!!

You could just try getting a brace for your foot as opposed to getting a cast

I think covering your own foot in plaster and bandages would be a very bad idea.
If you are not happy with what your doctor says go to another one. Or go to a hospital with an A&E department.

Drug store has an elastic one-piece wrap for your foot - try that.
