Okay so I woke up this morning and there is a strange sound in my right ear.
Like the noise when you go swimming and get water in your ear and it sounds sort of like a popping noise, but it just continues to make the noise.
Anyways, this has never happened to me just randomly like this. So what do I do?!

Is this normal? Or common?
Or is something wrong with me?

Help pleaseeee.
I'm really afraid I'm losing my hearing or something in that ear.
Ugh, scary.

Could it be from teeth grinding at night?

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a surprisingly common condition which affects millions of people. Although it is often referred to as "Ringing in the Ears" the sound heard might not be ringing (it can be a buzzing, hissing etc.).

Sufferers hear this sound constantly although, in many cases, it may only be noticeable when in a quiet environment. Cases can vary from those where it is just irritating through to those where the life of the sufferer is severely disrupted.

There are two types of Tinnitus:

Objective Tinnitus - where the sound is real and can be heard by a doctor.

Subjective Tinnitus - where the sound does not really exist. This is the most common type representing about 90% of cases.

Objective Tinnitus can usually be treated but Subjective Tinnitus has no easy cure which has lead to a great array of treatments being marketed.

Cause Of Tinnitus

The cause of Subjective Tinnitus is now understood to be the brain responding to hearing deterioration in an inappropriate way. If a person can no-longer hear certain frequencies the brain may respond by generating the perception of noise to fill the gap. This has been compared to people who have had an arm or leg amputated and still feel an aching, itching or even pain in the limb that is no longer there. Scans have shown the brain activity generating the noise but it is still not understood why this happens and why it only happens in some people.

Herbal treatments - These treatments are developed from herbs.. For thousands of years, in ancient India, China and in other countries, herbal remedies have cured a lot of people from all kinds of diseases.

We can't really ignore that. Herbal remedies also usually do not cause any side effects.

Even modern medicine is now agreeing that several herbs have curative values and have a large role to play.

The ginkgo biloba herb can be extremely effective in treating tinnitus.

It can enhance blood circulation and treat vertigo - both these conditions have been linked to tinnitus.

Ginkgo biloba can also calm your senses and ease the symptoms. On the negative side however,

herbal remedies might not be as effective for everyone.

Essential oils - Sometimes essential oils too work very well.

Some people have got very good results by applying one kind of oil.

And for others, a blend of various oils has worked. Both these approaches can work.

Oils such as Cypress, Lavender and Juniper have been tried by many tinnitus sufferers, and they report positive results.

Essential oils work best when they are applied through vaporization, massage, inhalation, compression and bathing.

Optimizing Your Diet - The food you eat is crucial to your health. When we choose the right foods, we stay healthy,

and when we opt for all that junk stuff, we fall ill.

Tinnitus affects over 36 million Americans. A medical condition arising from dysfunction in the auditory system, tinnitus

is characterized by persistent ringing, roaring, and/or clicking noises that rarely subside. If you have tinnitus, it can

make you feel like you're going crazy. But you don't have to suffer - tinnitus is treatable.

Before you can treat tinnitus, it's important to know what causes it. The short answer: a variety of things. Tinnitus can

be caused by something as simple as wax buildup on the eardrum, or something more serious like a tumor on the hearing

nerve. Various ear diseases are associated with tinnitus, as are effects from drug or alcohol abuse.

But most often it's repeated exposure to loud noises like gunfire, rock concerts, and chain saws that cause tinnitus. So it

makes sense that one of the best ways to prevent tinnitus is to protect and preserve your hearing, whose complex mechanism

turns sound waves into meaningful information your brain can process and identify.

Sound waves enter the ear canal and vibrate the ear drum. This causes the middle ear mechanism (ossicles) to vibrate,

sending the sound waves on to the inner ear and brain. Here they are turned into data your brain recognizes as sounds. Soft

sounds like whispers don't cause any harm, but loud sounds like airplane jets cause discomfort and, after repeated

exposure, hearing damage such a tinnitus.

My best guess would be the MP3 Player...especially if you have the little ear plugs. This is a rather sensitive area of your body as it has direct contact with your inner workings with little protection. You should limit the use of the small ear plugs and you should never use them while you sleep. Your ear-way should be allowed to have a fair amount of air flow, since this is a fairly damp area.

It might also be from high volume of the ear phones...depending on how loud you actually play it...and that might be more serious then just excess water build up. An ear drum is not designed to have loud noises (vibrations) so close (that's why you have an ear canal in the first place).

I would allow your ears to rest for a few days and stay away from playing your MP3 player too loud. I would also suggest that you invest in ear phones with a soft cover that will allow you to have clear sounding music without sticking those things inside of your ears. If after 2-3 days of resting your ears it does not clear up I would go see the doctor.

Good Luck~

Limit or avoid exposure to the noises you suspect are causing your tinnitus. If you cannot avoid loud noises, wear protective earplugs or earmuffs.
Try to ignore the sound by directing your attention to other things.
Practice relaxation techniques, such as biofeedback, meditation, or yoga. Stress and fatigue seem to make tinnitus worse. Read more:

Tinnitus is actually not a disease. It is actually a symptom of a problem that is rooted deep, somewhere within your body. The problem could be a simple one like an infection in the ear, or even simpler, such as ear wax. In some people, it could even be the result of a side-effect of a drug they took. Or it could be more complicated. However, we absolutely can treat it healthily. Read more here:
