Girls tend to have long hair, but why? is there a historical reason behind it? You do not find that many girls with short hair...

Men have always been the warriors and wage earners, and maintaining a lot of hair takes time. It also gets in the way.

I'm not a Bible person, nor am I religious, but there is a passage in Corinthians in the Bible where the apostle Paul states that men should have short hair but women should have long hair. I don't believe that such utterances are the word of any god but clearly even in biblical times, men were expected to have short hair and women long hair.

I think it's most likely that men have short hair because long hair requires more care and it gets in the way. (I can't imagine working on a car or motorcycle with long hair.) Women tend to have long hair because a nice head of hair is beautiful. (Yeah, it can be beautiful on a man too, but that's not usually the effect the man wants.)

There are several passages in the Bible, other than the one mentioned in a previous answer, dealing with short and long hair for both men and women. I remember reading them, but don't remember which passages. In general these passages say that men should not have long hair because they are "presenting themselves as if they were a woman". It was also considered rebellious and ungodly. These same passages say that women are supposed to have long hair to be virtuous, feminine, and beautiful. In Biblical times short hair was forbidden for women. That's the history behind it as I remember reading it.

As far as I'm concerned though hair length is of little importance as it is part of someone's overall appearance. Rejecting someone because of looks or hair length is shallow. I prefer to get to know someone before making a judgement call. It's the old saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Some of the nicest people I know would be rejects by society's "rules". Some of the cruelest people I know wear suits and ties. So....you just never know.

pvreditor...I work on cars, its one of my hobbies. ..and I have long hair, halfway down to my waist. It does get in the way so I tie it back while I'm working. Can't wait to do my first paint job! :)

Most people in society are brought up with the stereotypical view that boys have short hair and girls have long hair.

Most lads who had long hair in my day would get the mick taken out of them and vice versa.

I personally love a man with long hair - shows Independence and character!
Each period of history is different, based on hygiene and fashion of the time.
In 1624 Louis XIII went prematurely bald. He disguised this with a wig and started a fashion which became almost universal for European upper & middle class men by the beginning of the 18th Century during his similarly follicley challenged son's reign.

Also other reasons included ease of hairdressing (send your hair out to be done, you don't have to sit for hours in curlers), ease of cleaning (if you got lice you could boil your wig and shave your head and ----zip-no lice), this id men and women.

Now we have good products to clean our hair - and lots of influences off the t.v and movies to be different (if you dare). Mostly pressure from friends and family to be the same makes us all look alike.

After the 60's and 70s long hair on men just became less acceptable. I think that men with long hair were seen as misfits and not very well kept. Personally, if a man's hair is longer than his shoulders that just looks completely ugly.
