I've heard that PETA believes it's wrong to own animals for entertainment purposes. Does that include having pet dogs or cats?

My wife and I really feel like our dog is a valued member of our family. She even gets a place at the table when we have dinner.

Does PETA believe we are holding her prisoner and that we should turn her lose? There's no way she could fend for herself in the wild!

Yes. If you don't believe me write them and ask them. they feel that domestication was a bad idea and all our "animal slaves" should be set free. This includes well taken care of pets like your dog and my cat, who gets regular vet care, a balanced diet and would probably be hit by a car in less that a week if she was "liberated". They also oppose the use of service dogs for the blind and other disabled people.
They publicize the stands they take that they feel most people will agree with like stronger punishment for animal cruelty and not wearing fur coats and stopping testing of cosmetics and detergents on animals. but they also have an agenda that includes, letting domestic species not breed so they die out. complete Veganism and no more medical testing on animals. They also think that it's fine to commit arson against one animal Homo sapiens, to help other animals.
I think there are other better animal organizations to help if you have the time and money. Does your town have a shelter? Does it have a food bank for the pets of people who have fallen on hard times? Get involved with something local.

I have been told (by breeders who show dogs) when I worked for vets that PETA members have poisoned & released dogs from crates at dog shows as a protest of purebred dogs. That's way wrong! People who show are the ones who breed the best dogs - proven good specimens of the breed (by conformation & performance titles) & care about the health (genetic testing) and future welfare (careful placing with owners) of these dogs. But, the PETA people think no one should own purebred dogs till shelters are empty. Well, I am sorry, but I LOVE Boxers - getting a mixed breed Beagle/Sheltie/Golden Retriever is NOT going to meet my expectations or fufill my needs as a dog owner. People should be allowed to choose the breed (or mutt) they want. PETA can do all they can (within reason - no posioning ANY animals) to shut down puppy mills & backyard breeders, but show dog breeders are the good guys!

Who cares? The people in PETA are complete morons. Do what you want to animals. If we humans are indeed nothing more than animals too (as PETA believes), then that means we have no moral responsibility to treat them humanely...go hiking in mountains and meet up with a starving cougar, I guarantee he isn't going to treat you 'humanely'. So if we're 'just animals' too, why should we?

The killing of animals in slaughter houses isn't deliberately cruel. Places like that can't afford to be deliberately cruel. They kill in whatever way is most economically feasible, much like other animals kill in the way that requires the least expenditure of energy, regardless of the pain to the prey.

Anyway, sorry about that little mini-rant. I just really dislike PETA.

PETA would love nothing more than to create the ILLUSION of being the pet owners friend solely for financial reasons when in fact they are anything but the friend of anyone that owns and enjoys a pet.

We as pet owners are being attacked on two fronts, while PETA campaigns against animal ownership through activism and violence, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS has no connection with your local Humane Society, they only chose their name to create the illusion that they do) campaigns against animal ownership through legislation. You will see HSUS come into your community and lobby your local officials to enact restrictive animal control laws.
If you do a background study of both PETA and HSUS you will find that they have traded leadership on several occasions.

Don't worry about PETA, their inhumane treatment of animals has been highlighted lately with some of their people charged who promised to rehome some healthy pets but euthanased them in the back of a van, despite having no qualifications to peform euthanasia (botched some apparently) and then, dumped them in trash bags in a supermarket dumpster and I believe that's only the tip of the iceberg.

From what I've read in newspapers and magazine articles, I believe they do. Animals have been part of human existence for more than 40 thousand years. To completely leave animals alone and separate would not only be cruel to the animals, it would diminish the human race beyond recovery.

Yes. PETA is a terrorist organization dedicated to conferring 'rights' on animals.

"PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

Those guys still believe humans to be superior than humans, they just don't think in killing and/or other animals should be legal. As for the pets themselves, most animals who live in the wild rather rarely live long enough to see old age,as such things as predation, accidents;etc eventually kill off most animals as it probably did our cavemen ancestors.

I really wouldn't concern myself with PETA's beliefs...they are waaaayyyyy out there. Your dog sounds like it is spoiled rotten. Mine is jealous, he has to eat at his dish.

That is one lucky dog you have. I believe PETA mean "entertainment purpose" is that you treat it as a toy, or for someone's birthday.....And you lost interest in it and just either take it to the shelter waiting to be kill or let it loose. If every dog have a home like yours, we won't have any problem. I have a jack russell, a beagle and a mix at home. And when I am typing this message, the beagle taken my space in my bed. So, as long as you accept it as family member, you should be fine. By the way, how can you put your dog at the table in dinner time? She won't go crazy for the food? If it is any of mind, my dinner will be long gone before I even start. So, don't worry about it. There is a lot of dogs life just bad. As long as our dog life a happy life, we should feel good and try to help the others. Good luck
