It depends on which Christian you ask. Although God is one, each person has a slightly different relationship with Him. So God is personal. He is loving and cares about us.
As to what he is, I believe He progressed into what He is today. Others will have different perspectives on this, but for me, over billions of years, He learned to become perfect, to understand everything and to be completely selfless. Once achieving this status, He is now working to assist us with this task.

God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. The qualities and powers exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit are also revelations of the Father. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; 1 Cor. 15:28; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8; 1 Tim. 1:17; Ex. 34:6, 7; John 14:9.)

God is infinite, so any definition is going to be incomplete. But I will list some of his personal attributes as defined by the Bible:
1) God exists as three persons, who yet at the same time form one unified person - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - and that these three are co-equal and coexistent.
2) God is personal, not some natural force, so he thinks, feels, and can relate to people.
3) God is outside of nature, not part of it. Nature is God's creation and his work, but it is not him.
4) God is purely good with no evil in him at all (a.k.a.: holy). God is so pure that he cannot stand the presence of anyone who has any evil in him in the slightest.
5) God can do anything that he wants to (all-powerful).
6) God knows everything, since there are no limits to his intelligence or his knowledge.
7) God is timeless; he can see the past present & future all at once.
8) God can be everwhere all at once since he has no spacial limits either.

The question of defining the term god is extremely problematic - every sort of theism and every sort of theistic religion seems to have their own definitions. Indeed, there are so many definitions that when a person says they believe in a god, it isn't a very good idea to assume that you know what they are talking about. The wisest course of action is usually to ask them what they mean.
The root of the term (from Gothic root gheu; Sanskrit hub or emu, "to invoke or to sacrifice to") means either "the one invoked" or "the one sacrificed to." This indicates that whatever one calls "god," the relationship is not passive - instead, there is an active submission of the believer.
Some common characteristics of gods include: supernatural, powerful or all-powerful (omnipotent), loving or all-loving (omnibenevolent), wise or all-knowing (omniscient), creator of all existence, etc.

The Bible says God is the creator of heaven and earth. He is holy, just, pure, and loving. He is soverign and unchanging. He is what is called a "trinity." This consists of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God loves us so much that he made a way for the forgiveness of our sins. His son, Jesus Christ who is coequal with God came to Earth, lived a perfect life, died on a cross, and rose from the dead. If we place our faith in Him for the forgiveness of our sins, we can know God and spend eternity with Him in heaven.

He's the trinitarian God of the Bible. He's unchanging, and isn't subject to man's thoughts about Him. He's been the same for all eternity, He is outside of time. He's omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and omnibenevolent. And He also loves us enough to have sent His son to die for sinners like us.

God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and present in all places at once. He created the universe and He created human kind as His children.
He loves each and every person with ALL of His heart. He created mirrors of this relationship between God and mankind in the relationship between parents and children, but God is capable of far more love than any of us, so His bond to us as His children is far greater than the bond between parent and child ever could be.
There is only one God, but He expresses himself in 3 distinct personalities: The Father, The Son (Jesus), and The Holy Spirit.
As a people we chose to turn our backs on God, and as a result our world now suffers the consequences of isolation from God. But God still loves each and everyone of us, and has paid a great price to allow us to return to Him. Jesus paid the price for our rejection of God (by becoming mortal in order to die a sinners death, then rising to life again), so that whoever chooses to return to Him may do so through Jesus.
Because of His great love for us, those who return to Him are able to have a personal one-on-one relationship with God while still living on this Earth. This goes far beyond the commonly understood meaning of prayer, as it is as real and tangible as the relationship a child would have with their parents, only far greater. This is made possible by the Holy Spirit dwelling within each of those who return to God.
God has prepared a place for us (those who choose to return to Him through Jesus), so that when our Earthly bodies die, we will live with Him forever. At the end of time, all of mankind will be called before God, and judged. Those who returned to Him through Jesus will have been pardoned as a result of the huge price that Jesus paid for us. Those who did not will not be able to return to God - Ever.
