I came to Osaka when I was 16 and stayed with a host family for the summer. I couldn't wait to come back. Now I'm 19, in college, in Tokyo. Really feeling the effects of being alone. The kids in the dorm won't talk to me, even when I talk to them. I have to wake up so early to get to school, and it's like an hour commute, and everything's so expensive. Everyone at home is a mess too because one of my friends just past away yesterday. I kinda think I just want a girlfriend or something so that I don't feel so lonely. I could say that I want to go home but really this is the only chance I'm ever going to get to go away for a year. In a year I can become fluent in Japanese, and being home wouldn't be any less lonely or depressing because all my friends are away at college anyway. It's just such a weird feeling. any advice? If you like in Tokyo, I'm desperate enough to just meet up and talk. My japanese isn't very good, but I want to learn, and be out as often as possible.

Hi. I hear you. I wish I were in Japan so I could come over and talk. But I don't so I will just have to try to support you long distance. You sound like a very decent guy who has a good plan going. What you lack is human contact. Until you do find that someone special, consider joining some organization or club around you. Japanese people like activities in groups. That is how they boond. You are floating because you have not bonded in a cultural way. If you try a smaller group that is focused on something, they will see you as one of them and welcome you more.

It is famous that people from Osaka say "People in Tokyo are so cold,or are not kind". (It might be true, but I have never lived in Osaka but in Tokyo so I'm not sure.) Regardless many people from Osaka aren't much interested in Tokyo, some of them move to Tokyo for business, for study, for family and etc. So how about making friends from Osaka, and extolling the virtues of Osaka or Kansai with them like they do. For example, how Kansai culture and people in Osaka are nicer, more witty, more international and so on. It might work to reduce your stress.

When I lived in UK, I was feeling like you for the first. I couldn't understand English at all then.
I decided to study English harder, and spent more than 5 hours for English study everyday.
After 3 month passed, I could suddenly understand what ppl are talking.
It would be a great experience that you study outside of your home country.
Don't give up.
There are many web sites written in English. Find your friend.
good luck.

Dude, I don't know what your problem is. Go find some english speaking guys to hang with first. Then you'll find it easier to meet the girls. I spent 6 weeks in Tokyo once in 95 on business. It is a hell of a lot of fun. Hang in there. And get out of your dorm room. Get out and see the city.

I can understand how you feel. Time passes so quickly and it will be time to go home before you know it. In the meantime, try to make the best of your time there. Go out and meet people and try to see all the interesting places. Try to keep in touch with family and friends online.
