Because government wants to define morality in every since of the matter. They decide what is and isn't marriage. This is not left to the states as it should be, but by "popular demand" has been taken into the hands of the majority. Thus, the majority dictate morality despite what is or isn't moral. Today, the majority say sex before marriage is just fine, but polygamy isn't.

Tradinitionally polygamy means that one man and many women are married. Now, i would find that very degrading to women. It's better for both sides if they can focus on eachother alone.

The problem is that oftentimes people who shouldn't marry do so out of desperation or other wrong reasons, methinks. Or they don't consider truly what a marriage means, which theoretically lasts until death and only breaks seldomly. Nowadays it's the exact opposite, if a marriage lasts it's something special.

Polygamy is illegal because the government doesn't want the extra paperwork that it would take them to make sure all marriage contracts between spouses were in line and everyone was getting taxed like they should be. I think it should be legal. If a person wants more than one spouse, I see no reason he or she should not have that right to.

The legal complications are enormous in today's society and it is too easily corrupted and taken for granted in today's society. If you want to be in that kind of relationship you can do it unofficially and be married only religiously or whatever.

But if they were too legalise it, women must be able to have as many husbands as she wants as well, and with the way society is heading that could be as likely as a husband with many wives-but i bet men don't like the sound of that! Besides polygamy is discouraged in most religions, in the Qur'an it is only allowed in very special circumstances and God says you can only have this type of marriage if it is fair but then says "you can never be fair in a polygamous relationship". But people would still corrupt this anyway.

Marriage between two people is described in the Bible in Genesis by Adam.

So shall a man leave his family and cleave to his wife. The bible also states that the man and his wife become one flesh.

Adam never said wives as in plural and the bible never said more than one flesh.

Polygamy did happen in many biblical stories, but if you read about them, they were always probematic. Sarah and Hagar did not get along at all once she gave Hagar to Abraham to bear a child.

Jacob was always being torn between his two wives, who used him more as a baby making machine than a husband, not to mention the bond servents that they pressed him into service for also.

We do not find one instance of marital peace within any of these situations.

All our what if's as you mention are just that, what if's. What if we trust and rely on God to meet our needs? No one needs strife and unrest in their life and no one should want to cause unrest in anthers.

Consenting adult should be free to practice polygamy if they choose. It is wrong for the goverment to step into these kind of personal choices. Allow people to believe and live as they choose. That should be what FREEDOM truly means.

our laws should (theoritically at least) be based on the political theory of liberalism (no, i dont mean voting for democrats).

Liberalism: Every individual should be free to do as they like as long as their actions do no not harm society. Thats why your not "free" to assault someone, or to have sex without consent. Personally, i think polygamy is idiotic and foolish on many different levels, but it does no harm to anyone so i dont see why it should be illegal.

There are many problems with polygamy. But I believe it is better for a man to have one wife or the woman to have one husband. That way they can use there energy to please each other and not have to share affections.

Polygamy marriage, is looked at as if it's a cult.
One man, many women, the man rules over the women & the children... isn't that a cult?
