She says it takes the pain away of what is bothering her. What kind of mental problem is it then and would it matter if her mother had mental problems and was in an institution too? Will she turn out like her mother?

It means that she is suffering emotional pain. She does not understand this pain; where it comes from or how to deal with it, so she cuts herself; at least she knows why that hurts and physical pain can be a distraction from other pains.
does not mean she's "mental" if by that term you mean she is insane or incurable. She needs counselling. It is likely she is following some of the same patterns as her mother because she was raised and influenced by her and it seems her mom still has unresolved pain of her own. It is not likely to be a genetic condition which is causing her to cut or be "mental" in this manner. Simple counselling will likely resolve her concerns.
God Bless

Yes, unfortunately, it does mean she has a mental health problem. There are free counselors who can help her at the local county Mental Health Center. This form of self-mutilation is a form of control. She can not control the outside circumstance that is causing her pain, therrefore she cuts in order to control the amount of pain she inflicts each time.

Just because her mother has had problems does not mean that your friend has to be like her. Your friend can get help for her problems and choose to live a healthy life.

I used to do that. It started when I was 12 (I'm 28 now and on meds) The urge is sometimes there but not a much since I've been on medicine. She is obviously depressed. I suffered for years thinkin' I was helpless and even enjoying cutting and feeling like crap. She needs help. Shrinks didn't do it for me. They always thought I was trying to kill myself. ( you hear more about self mutilation now that in the past). I went to my regular doctor and she prescribed Zoloft which helped a lot. Good luck. Don't be mad at her just let her know you worry and care a lot for her. Be strong because she isn't.

ABSOLUTLY NOT!

she is probably going through a very hard and emotional time (so emotion she has gone numb- hence the not being able to feel anything) It is important for you as her friend to be there and support her when erv she needs it.

as a former cutter myself i can understand how she is feeling, and with the help of my friend and professional help i was able to conqure my addiction. You must remember not to force her or judge, just be there and offer to talk! support is the best thing you can do!

Tell someone is you are worried- your parents, a school counsellor, teacher or a trusted adult. Dont talk behind her back because if she finds out it will make her feel worse about herself and probably cut even worse!

good luck and keep by her!

As a former person (in a past life) that used to do something similiar, it means that she is depressive. Cutting/burning is a temporary way to "escape". Any sort serious injury such as cutting releases endorphins to "feel" better. I would highly recommend listening to her, because it is her way of letting the world know she needs your help; a friend. Do something positive by taking her out to get her nails done, you can talk there. If money is a problem, bake brownies, us women love chocoloate! This way in that down time, you can chat while eating some leftover bsatter. She is not crazy, she just needs help. Goodluck!

It is quite possible that she is bi-polar as this mental disease causes people to cut. Professional help is the only answer.
Best of luck!

Your friend needs professional help with this. Obviously this is not a natural thing for anyone to do.

Even just speaking to someone about things helps...

I hope your friend will be OK

nope. she just going through a hard time but she'll get out of this very strong and be extremely succesful in life. The richest, most succesful people I ever met were cutters when they were younger (teens and early 20s)
do help her through with it but do not put her down.,

Whatever she has, I have a niece that has it too. She banged up her head/face, cut herself, still remains self-destructive, alternates between bulimia, binging and anorexia. I think my niece has a mental disorder...I don't understand it but I think eating disorders are epidemic in this society.
