Acorns used to be a popular foodstuff, both here in England (they even made acorn coffee)and also in the US among native people.

The big advantage is that it stores really well.

Here is a recipe (and no I have never tried it!)

ACORN BREAD

Well worth the effort! You will be amazed at the wonderful nutty flavor.

To prepare acorn meal: Shell the acorns, grind coarsely, add water and bring to a boil. Pour off water; repeat with fresh water until the water is no longer dark and the meal tastes sweet. (This soaking and boiling removes the bitterness.)

To prepare bread:

Mix: 1 1/2 c. flour 1 1/2 c. acorn meal 1/2 c. melted butter 1/2 c. honey or molasses 1 tsp. salt 3 tsp. baking powder 1/2 c. buttermilk

Pour into 8-inch pan or muffin tins and bake in 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes.
