I have heard that bells are harmful for cats, they disorient them and even can turn them deaf, besides such a permanent close noise being really annoying for an animal whose ears are much more sensitive than ours. Is this true?

No, that is not true. I have had bells on my cats for years and they have no hearing problems and they can even walk where they don't make any noise. I put them on them to help the bird population but the cats have learned new and fun ways to attack them.

Are you talking about the cat collars with bells on them? If so, absolutely not, they do not harm the hearing of cats. People put bells on cat collars to warn the birds the cat is coming, so the birds can get away from the cat. Of course if you want your cat to hunt, don't buy a collar with a bell, because rodents can hear the bell too.

Not unless you have a cowbell strapped to the cat. Small bells that come on collars are safe for hearing health.
