A great program to open a multitude of video files is called KM player. Check it out, it's FREE! Good luck!

Windows Media Player 10 as long as you have the proper codecs installed for the avi you are trying to play.
If you don't like it then get VideoLan for free from here: http://www.videolan.org/
It plays all sorts of filetypes.
