If you mean the Arabian penninsular then there were Jews, Christians and all forms of pagan religions. The pagan religions were usually tied to the tribe that one was a part of. While he (saw) was still in Mecca it was mainly the leaders of the ruling tribes of Mecca that opposed Islam because they were afraid it would damage them economically. All the idols were in the Kabbah and there were many pilgrims that came to Mecca in order to worship. When they came they brought economic opportunity. If Islam took over in Mecca, all the idols would be gone and hence they were afraid that would be economically damaging.

When Muhammad (saw) moved to Medina at the request of some of the Medinans there were people of different faiths that opposed his leadership. But there were also those that accepted it. As the story goes some pretended to be on his side but in the end they showed that they were not. Some of these were Jews and some were of the local Arab tribal religions. Not all the Jews opposed Muhammad (saw) and not all the Arabs accepted him.

If you mean present day Saudi Arabia, that is an invention of the west, the family of Saud being put in power by the British. The religion there now is purported to be Islam but is not true Islam but before the Sauds it was Islam and many other religions. The ironic part is that now the Saudi government has once again made Mecca into an economic opportunity with huge $1000/night hotels and shopping bazaars all around the sacred site. And they deny Muhammad (saw) at every chance. Deny the hadith, deny the sirah, deny his companions (peace and blessings on all of them). They are no better then the Quraish that were there in Muhammad's (saw) time.

And Allah knows best.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

When Prophet Mohammed was born, there were 3 main groups in Arabia, Christians, Jews and polytheists. These three groups believed in Allah and also held Abraham in high esteem. Polytheist would call upon Allah, only when there is very severe problems and rest of the time they worshiped Idols, believing that these Idols will intercede for them with Allah. They even made idols of Prophet Abraham.

Prophet Mohammed was born in a Kuraish tribe, which is polytheist and are the custodians of Kaaba, which muslims believe to be build by Prophet Abraham for the sole worship of Allah. Even though Prophet Mohammed was born in a polytheist family, he always disliked idol worshiped and used to go for meditating along.

There is some people recently who argue that Allah is not the God of Abraham, and is only a pagan idol. This is refuted by Arabic speaking Christians and Jews, who still call God Allah. See a discussion about this in a Catholic forum

There were many different religions, nearly all based on the deification of idols (like Lak, and Mut). There were also early Christians and Jews living in the area. At one point or another all came under attack or peacefully accepted the preachings of Prophet Mohammed.

Before Islam, in Saudi Arabia people used to worship Allah.
They used to also worship idols. i.e. associate partners with Allah.
Islam preaches monotheism - There is no God, but Allah.
The religious leaders that opposed Muhammed (Peace be upon him) were the leaders of the tribes living near the Kaabah in Makkah.
The Jews living in and around this area also opposed him.

Islam is very similar to Judaism. Both are semitic religions and share the common ancestry of Abraham.

Opposition came mainly from pagans because they were to lose power over slaves because of Islam and Jews because they knew Muhammad was the prophet mentioned in Torah to be the final one.
