It is calorie free and so cannot make you fat.
There are sweeterners without aspartame in them, if you check the labels before purchasing them.
Aspartame has a bad press, it is in a lot of soft drinks and many other products.
There is no positive proof, but I avoid it on the off chance and when i ise a sweetener I use one without aspartame. I never use sugar which is as toxic as aspartame is supposed to be.
You really should'nt believe everything you read on the internet, if you did you would'nt consume anything. And I've had bad allergic reactions to so called natural wholesome herbal remedies. I'm also allergic to bananas, a most natural food.
What works for you works for you, if you are worried or being cautious, don't use them.
I'm not convinced either which way on the arguement on aspartame, ive never consumed anything with it in, but usually avoid additives. For diabetics sorbitol is more widely used. They're are sweeterners using sorbitol. Some using saccharin and others using aspartame. Sorbitol can have a laxative effect.

This has kind of already been said but although sweeteners have zero calories (there might be some with a very small amount) they do have other side effects. As some others have stated aspartame is particularly bad. Donald Rumsfeld (can't remember his job title in American politics) holds a large personal investment in aspartame and therefore a lot of the studies showing that aspartame isn't bad are doctored results. The independent studies as far as I know show significantly that aspartame is very bad for you and had been linked to cancer as well as other side affects such as depression, irritability and headaches just to mention a few. You can find out more information on this just remember to check the authenticity of the people doing the results. Sorry to go of the point but it's just important to stress that zero calories often brings other unwanted toxins into your body.

One of the most common sweeteners, aspertame, is a chemical and the side effects are pretty much unknown over a long period. I heard that the body doesn't know what to do with this chemical so it just gets stored - imagine all the sweet drinks, all the sweet foods (almost always the sugar-free or diet stuff), all that aspertame being stored, it will eventually make you increase in size. Sugar can at least be burned off with exercise, which is why I always buy things with sugar or glucose in rather than the diet or low sugar stuff. Besides, sugar tastes better!

It is NOT rubbish.
Aspartame is evil. 10% of it is methanol, when ingested it breaks down into Formic Acid and Formaldehyde.
When formaldehyde gets into the body, it attaches to fat cells making it neigh on impossible for the body to break it down naturally, so the fat stays on. At the same time, you are eating more to counter the other effects aspartame has.
Really, Aspartame is the most heinous additive ever. It is the ONLY additive that must carry a health warning!
The American Food and Drugs Administration had to produce a list of side effects associated with it. 92 entries on that list!
Do yourself a favour and search the Internet, the only sites that say anything good are owned by the manufacturers or the government. All the independent sites show its real colours.
read the 'Rense' info below to find out about its history.

No but sweetners themselves are rubbish. Sugar has 16 calories per teaspoon so just dont eat that chocolate bar and you can have the real thing instead of some synthetic crap.

It's highly probable that most sweeteners aren't healthy and some of them are surprisingly high in carbs/calories but they certainly aren't more fattening than sugar.

One study showed that artificial sweeteners tend to confuse your body. Your body originally thinks that "Sweet" = "Calories". Artificial sweeteners teach your body that sweet does not equal calories, so it lets you eat more of sweet than would normally be good for you, even if the sweet DOES have excess calories.
