Playpen. Your grandchild can sleep in the playpen and play also, thus multi- purpose. Also it can be moved from room to room, and a baby bed cannot as easily. Congratulations....I've got three!!!

The playpen is nice because most have the bassinette insert and they can be moved from one room to another. However, the weight limit for the inserts isnt very high so you can't use it very long and then the baby will be at the bottom of the playpen, and trust me, getting a baby from the bottom of one of those things when they cant stand up on their own to reach for you is hell!

Playpens normally only have a thin pad, but the baby bed will have the mattress and be comfertable. Plus you can reach for the baby easier since the bed is higher and with some cribs the gate comes down to make it even easier.

Personally I would go with the baby bed. I have a playpen for my son who is 6 months old and only used it for a few weeks after he was born so I wouldnt have to carry him upstairs after my C-Section every time he napped. He still doesnt sit up completely on his own, so if I put him in it to sleep I dont even know if I could bend over the side and reach him at the bottom, plus he plays in his jumper and saucer and wont play in the playpen at all.

Good luck!

Playpen. I'm due in Jan. and my mother has a playpen for the baby, she says its easy to work with. Because when the baby leaves she can fold playpen and place to side and still have plenty of room to due her everyday activities. Congrats on the grand baby. God bless~~

You can get a play pen because some of the makers make an insert that can be risen or lowered so and infant will not fall out or to change the diaper and then when out grown you have the playpen. It's almost like a two in one thing.

I would go for the playpen. It will free you up and keep the baby entertained (for how long, is up to the little one).
For the first little while I doubt that you will be putting the baby down if you're the usual doting grandparent.
For the first few months the baby will be sleeping in its bassinet anyway.
Congratulations on the upcoming event.

You will likely get more use out of a pack and play and they take up less space than a playpen. Many of them have bassinet and changing table attachments that come with them, as well. These are very handy. It is nice not to have to change them on the couch or bed, as they are bound to pee while you are changing them more than once! Good luck, and congratulations on the grand baby to be!

I only had a playpen as my daughter's bed and it was fine. When she was small it had the insert to lay her in so you didn't have to put her all the way down on the bottom, and when she was bigger she liked it because it had the high walls. We put her right into a normal size bed when she started climbing out of it at around 2 yrs. It was an economical choice for us.

playpen!

A baby can take naps in a playpen, but can't play in a baby bed.

Go for the playpen. It can serve a dual purpose. I keep my grand daughter often and it works for play, safety and sleep.
