Fennel
This vegetable is often called Finocchio or Sweet Anise. The edible portions are the enlarged bases of the leaf petioles, which overlap each other to form a compact "bulb." Fennel can be
eaten cooked or raw like celery, and, because of its licorice taste, is used in flavoring. It also stores well.

Fennel has a mild licorice taste. Slice the bulb and roast it in the oven with olive oil. You are misguided if you are counting calories of vegetables. Talk to a nutrionist and follow the food pyramid.

Fennel is mostly water. Gobble it up to your heart's content and you won't see any difference in your waisline, I promise. Have you already tried it with fish? Try it thinly sliced over fish--any fish--with some thinly sliced onion and lemon. You can sneak it into nearly any fish preparation and people will wonder what you did to make it taste so good.

I married into an Italian family and they serve it after a meal for "digestion." It is also good just for the fact that it's a veggie.

I can only imagine that it is good for you, it tastes so bad. Why is it that all the things that taste the worst are usually the same ones that are really good for you, e.g. spinach.
