Because there are a lot of 'vegetarians' who do eat fish! For us non veggies it can be difficult to find something to cook for vegetarians -fish just widens the options! Don't be upset by it, just tell them you don't eat fish and move on!!

Yes it annoys the hell outta me!
I didn't like fish when I did eat meat. I know there are still some people who say they're veggies when they eat fish (which according to the Vegetarian Society website is NOT a classification of vegetarian whatsoever) but generally if you say vegetarian I wish people would take that to mean you don't eat ANY meat, be it poultry, meat or fish!

If you look up vegetarian there are many different kinds. True, not eating any seafood or meat is what a real vegetarian is... but some just prefer to not eat land animals. I used to still eat fish because I wasn't getting enough nutriants from the food I WAS eating. I felt bad about eating them so I gave that up too and now I don't eat any seafood or meat. I can't understand though... some people feel that fish and other seafood aren't as smart as land animals (even though it's not true) so they don't feel it's wrong. Don't let it get to you though, some people will come around and even if they don't just let them be.

There we go, the weekly question ! I knew it would appear sometime this week, it always does. Thanks for asking it, it brings out lots of stupidity and ignorance in some answers.
Yep, it bothers me like hell because it means people are totally missing the point of vegetarianism and confusing the issue for vegetarians.
Out of all of Yahoo Answers this is the one thing that I find most frustrating. I have no clue why people think they can make up thier own definition for vegetarian. Its a word in the dictionary, with a proper definition, would you redefine other words ? Where would we be if we all redefined any words we wanted to, the English language woudl disappear.
If you eat fish, you are not a vegetarian.
No "nearly", "part time", "almost". You're not. End of story.

I hate that as well, if I go to a formal dinner or a charity meal, the majority of vegetarian dishes are fish...Idiots!
I agree with you that to be a vegetarian you believe in a cruelty free way of eating. how can killing a fish be uncruel. It isn't along with crustaceans too.
I have a rule I use which allows my friends to understand my choices more easily, It helps to carify things right up, here goes!... "If it had a face I don't eat it, or anything that may have come from it's death or injury".

When I was on holiday in America I found it really difficult to get a decent veggie meal. No disrespect to Americans, but they simply couldn't get their head round the idea of someone not eating meat, or chicken, or fish! I'd get "But chicken/fish isn't meat." YES IT IS! I choose not to eat anything that has had to be killed. I think it will take a change in society's attitude, and a general raising of the level of education for the simple minded!

It definately bothers me. People shouldn't presume that you would still eat fish if you're a veg. I'm amazed how many ignorant people there are out there who will try and claim that poultry is okay for vegetarians as well.
I find it's better not to talk about my eating habits with meat eaters but most the time they really want to ask you a million questions about being vegetarian and try to convert you. etc.

Please don't say you are a vegetarian if you eat fish you are NOT a veggie Quote from The vegetarian Society "don't be a pesky-vore by ordering fish and calling yourself a veggie" Vegetarians don't eat any animals including fish. There is no such thing as a veggie who eats fish / shell fish or chicken.

Yes, it does. I think the misconception arises because many pescatarians misidentify as vegetarians. I think it mostly annoys me because of the bad use of language. But that's just me.
It does get a bit frustrating sometimes, especially when you ask for a vegetarian meal and get presented with pasta a la octopus! (true story, but there was a language barrier to deal with there as well.)
I have to say though, the weirdest 'But does that mean you can eat x' question I've had though was 'Can you still have bacon?' courtesy of my grandma.

Yes it annoys me because fish are animals, All people who eat fish should stop calling themselves vegetarian because they are obviously not. Anyone who eats fish and claims to be veggie should look at the vegetarian website where it states 'A Vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats' . People calling them selves semi-veggies or demi-veggies is ridiculous, there is no such thing! if you eat any meat then your not a veggie at all!
