Eggs sold at grocery stores are not "in essence a baby chicken." Baby chickens come from fertilized eggs. Eggs sold in the store are unfertilized (there are rare exceptions like Pilipino balut sold in some Asian markets, but again, those are rare exceptions).

Eggs aren't poultry since poultry, by definition, are the actual birds. They aren't meat since, in this context, meat means an animal's flesh. Eggs are pretty much their own category of foodstuff.

An egg is not a baby chicken.

We get this question every week and it baffles me that people can reach adulthood without knowing about reproduction.

An Egg cannot become a chicken unless its fertilised by a cockerel, so it cannot be considered meat or poultry, it will never be either.

In the context of eggs you buy for food that is.

Most eggs eaten today are not fertilised eggs so they're just eggs...since they come from a poultry animal I guess technically they're a poultry product in the same way as milk is a dairy product.

An egg is considered poultry, but it is mostly made up of protein. It isn't much of anything until the chick breaks out . Good Luck ! :)

An egg that is on a supermarket shelf had never contained a chick at any point, as it had not been fertilised. An egg is just the product of chicken ovulation- chickens release unfertilised eggs instead of menstruating, as mammals do.
